Dual panel file manager (similar to Norton Commander, Midnight Commander, FAR, etc.).

It lets you manage your files, copy and move them from one panel to another. That's more convenient than that explorer - like "copy" and then "paste" steps.

Its abilities are not limited by the device's internal memory, this file manager can also transfer (upload or download) files to and from FTP servers and Windows network shares (Samba plug-in is required to be installed), create or extract ZIP archives. For the advanced users, this file manager has also the "root:" (or "su" - super user) mode that is essential to work with system files on a rooted phone, to change file permissions attributes and owners (chmod and chown) and even execute your own shell commands.

Please note the following: to select more than one files tap on the right side of the panel! Yes, one side will activate, and the other side will select.

The application comes with a lot of options of customization which allow you to adjust its behavior to your personal habits.

First: I give Ghost Commander v1.50.1 5 Stars; the smb & sFTP plugins are functionality I require daily.
Second: I give Ghost Commander v1.39.3 1 Star; without smb & sFTP plugins the app doesn't fit my needs.
Given the above; is why the average is three stars;

On my Kindle Fire v.2011, I sideloaded v1.50.1 for the plugins; but
The Amazon App store keeps trying to down grade my version. I do have "Allow Installation of Applications: From Unknown Sources" enabled!

I made a donation to Ghost Squared AUG-6, then e-mailed requesting a update. Ghost Squared's Sergei submitted an update AUG-12, and Sergei said,"I'm planing to make a special edition of the application combining all the plugin into the main app."

This is a great Tablet clone version of Norton's Commander &/or FLOSS's GNU Midnight Commander (aka mc) with plugins allowing secure file transfer (sFTP), FTP servers, and Windows

My favorite file manager

I have to preface this by saying I've used an alternate file manager on my computer ever since I found one. Haven't used explorer in longer than I care to admit. Even on my mac, whose finder is much more useful, for anything more than finding an opening something I have installed an additional manager. I tend to prefer those that have the ability to be dual-paned and make moving files easier. Just don't like to cut and paste manually.
Since I found Ghost Commander I haven't used anything else on my androids. It works equally well on a phone and on a tablet. For moving files it can't be beat, and I have used several others. It is especially useful on small screens, since you have the option of displaying in list form rather than icons, thumbnails, etc., although it can do that as well. You can make favorites of your most used locations, and they'll be on the home screen for easier access.
If you have any need of renaming, moving or simply finding files on your android device you may want to give it a try. It's a lot more flexible than pretty much everything else out there.
For those wanting advanced features there are plenty of those, like server access, advanced features with rooted devices and so on. It does everything a file manager should with very little fuss.
One last plus. Unlike so many of the free apps out there, there's not even a hint of an ad.

I've been using Ghost Commander (GC) for several years. Since I installed it on my first smartphone, it's been among the first apps I've installed on my subsequent Android-based devices. For me, it's a mandatory app.

I particularly liked the dual directory format. If you want to copy or move files from one directory to another, it's helpful to set up the destination directory on the right side and the source directory on the left. When you select the file to copy or move from the source directory, GC queries the function for comfirmation, using the destination directory as a default. You can change it, of course, but if you set up the destination directory ahead of time, you just confirm the copy or move function. The dual firectory format is also helpful when comparing directory contents.

Since I first installed GC on my first smartphone, a pic viewer was added. I've found it to be more effective than the Orignal Equipment Manufacturer's (OEM's) pic viewer. For example, there are somze cases where the embedded pic viewer in the OEM browser will not permit copying. I can usually copy the pic opening it in a separate link apart from its webpage. GC acts much more quickly than the OEM viewer, before the "rules" of the webpage are invoked and I'm able to separate the pic and I'm able to copy the pic without restrictions.

Personally, I like to keep important files, like my .apk, .pic & other data files in my own, separate directory. This way, if needed, I can download all of my important stuff with one copy function instead of performing several copy functions to retrieve them from their native directories. If you want to do the same, place a numeric 1 at the beginning of the directory name, like 1_MyInitials. This way it will be among the top of your list of other directories and data files. And, be sure you create this directory at the base or root location.

I would suggest, this is not an app for novices. Those who are not knowledgeable about files and directory structures could delete an important file, disabling an app or device.

I'm an old-school Linux user who uses Midnight Commander, so how could I not love Ghost Commander? Move files around, copy, delete and edit from there. A whole lot faster and (for me anyway) easier than an icon-driven file manager. About the only thing missing is the Lynx-like navigation where I use the Bluetooth keyboard arrow keys to move in and out of directories. I know, spoiled, huh?

I give this a 4 because I never give 5's.

I've used Midnight Commander on my Windows boxes and on my Macs, it gives you so much more power than Windows Explorer or Mac's Finder. So when I got my Nook HD+ tablet, I loaded it immediately. It gives you as low level access to the tablet's Android OS that you could possibly need, including the ability to totally bollix things up, so don't mess with stuff that you don't understand! My favorite use is to rename Project Gutenberg epubs to a recognizable title after downloading a bunch.

If you ever used the old Norton Commander, Windows Commander, or Total Commander, you know how to use Ghost Commander. The two column interface makes copying, moving, or deleting files a breeze. The numerical commands, 3 view, 4 edit, 5 copy, 6 move, 7 make directory, 8 delete have been standard for this type of file utility for years and years. Give it a shot if you need to move files internally on your device. Great if you use a flash drive!
