Although the first English novel is reported to be published in the 15th Century, Wilkie Collins had a huge impact on the trade. Hi Woman in White is credited as the first mystery novel, a genre fiction that has been wildly successful and popular among readers. Wilkie, perhaps due to his legal training and his association with Charles Dickens, He had an well-developed gift for sketching his characters and telling their stories from different viewpoints.
'After Dark' is a collection of six of his short stories, each told from the viewpoint of William Kerby who traveled to paint portraits of paying customers. Kerby revealed that sitting for a painting can be tedious and that his subjects were inclined to reveal the circumstances of their lives, often including topics that they would not normally have shared.
When Kerby was prescribed eye rest by his physician, he had no way to earn a living. His wife suggested he publish the stories he had heard over the years. She took dictation so that his eyes could rest.
The result is an imaginative collection of life experiences of those living in the mid-19th century. The language and expressions can, of course, be foreign to us and make the reading a little awkward. I just stuck with it for the benefit of learning more about how people viewed life and interacted at that time. I had wondered, for example, how women and servants were viewed and those questions were soon answered.
If you are the curious sort, you may well enjoy the stories not only for their cultural revelations but also for the ingenious ways in which Wilkie created intrigue and suspense. Who knows, perhaps he reincarnated at Stephen King! ;-)

Before I begin, by the aid of my wife’s patient attention and ready pen, to relate any of the stories which I have heard at various times from persons whose likenesses I have been employed to take, it will not be amiss if I try to secure the reader’s interest in the following pages, by briefly explaining how I became possessed of the narrative matter which they contain.Of myself I have nothing to say, but that I have followed the profession of a traveling portrait-painter for the last fifteen years. The pursuit of my calling has not only led me all through England, but has taken me twice to Scotland, and once to Ireland. In moving from district to district, I am never guided beforehand by any settled plan. Sometimes the letters of recommendation which I get from persons who are satisfied with the work I have done for them determine the direction in which I travel. Sometimes I hear of a new neighborhood in which there is no resident artist of ability, and remove thither on speculation. Sometimes my friends among the picture-dealers say a good word on my behalf to their rich customers, and so pave the way for me in the large towns. Sometimes my prosperous and famous brother-artists, hearing of small commissions which it is not worth their while to accept, mention my name, and procure me introductions to pleasant country houses. Thus I get on, now in one way and now in another, not winning a reputation or making a fortune, but happier, perhaps, on the whole, than many men who have got both the one and the other. So, at least, I try to think now, though I started in my youth with as high an ambition as the best of them.

You can't imagine the joy I received from the reading of all the stories Mr Kerry wrote! Words can't begin to say how they blessed my heart! Thanks so much and the author, Wilkes, is incomparable!

I have many books by Wilkie Collins, and consider him to be one of the best storytellers of all time. He captures the characters so vividly, and the stories are well-told, so much so that I cannot put them down, and have to read the entire book in one sitting. His language is unusual in these days, but you almost feel each character through that language, and the settings are so real as he describes them. You want to root for the heroes from beginning to end. I love his books and I striving to get every one of them, since they are most definitely classics and always will be.

I love books of yesteryear and this lived up to my expectations. Several stories of mystery that are just not to be missed.

This is a collection of stories held together by a central narrative (think Canterbury Tales) But don't bother downloading this free book. You just get past the preliminary narrative and into the first tale and a large part of the first tale is missing! So you can make absolutely NO sense of the first story. (This was not a download problem because I re-downloaded and the segment was still missing.) Plus the formatting is bad throughout the book, with half lines of print. I reported the missing portion to Amazon and eventually it might get fixed, but for now you can download another copy of this book (Annotated version) for $2 which has a working Table of Contents allowing you to access any of the tales directly. I love Wilkie Collins and this book is worth reading if you are a fan, just skip this free version.

Pleasant setting in Italy. The usual Collins twist and turns both character wise and situation.
Never leaves a loose end.

A Good read

I have this on my kindle and find no problems with reading it. It is well written and an excellent read about an artist who is unable to use his eyes to paint for 6 months. His wife suggests another way to earn money by telling stories he has heard over the years and she would write them down and a book comes into being. It is interesting how the title After Dark is chosen. As usual Wilkie Collins comes through with his excellent english of the period, remember his books were written in the 1800's. All the stories are historical and not everyones cup of tea.
