The Citizen isn’t the only thing that’s been a part of the Bay Area for a long time. The Clear Creek Independent School District boasts a much longer history.
It celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2008.
The district was formed back in 1948 with the consolidation of the schools in Webster, Seabrook, Kemah and League City.
Clear Lake City, Taylor Lake Village, El Lago and Nassau Bay were not even in the planning stages back then.
Former principal and CCISD trustee Ralph Parr, who grew up in the school district, remembers back when Webster and League City both had high schools, while Seabrook and Kemah had intermediate schools and sent their older students to Webster High.
At the time of the merger, CCISD had fewer than 1,000 students. In recent years, enrollment has grown by 1,000 a year until today it is the 27th largest district in the state with 43 campuses and almost 39,000 students.
With the consolidation, Webster High became the only high school. Then, when Clear Creek High was built in 1957, after a bond election was approved, Webster High became Webster Intermediate, leaving Creek as the only high school until Clear Lake High opened in 1972.
Clear Brook High opened its doors in 1988, Clear Springs High in 2008 and in 2010 Clear Falls High became the centerpiece of the new Education Village between Kemah and League City.
NEW LOOK FOR CREEK
Clear Creek High has since undergone a $40 million renovation, giving it an all new look and many more years of service to the community.
Meanwhile, Webster Intermediate students were rezoned to the new Westbrook Intermediate and the building remodeled to house Clear View Education Center for at-risk students.
While that structure is the oldest CCISD building housing a school, the oldest school building is the former Bay Elementary School structure, which was converted into the CCISD Records Center when the new Bay Elementary was built in Seabrook in 1996.
