MAKERERE University is to start a masters degree programe in Neurosurgery to increase the number of neurosurgeons in the country.
Currently, Uganda has about five neurosurgeons.
The Principal of the university’s College of Health Sciences, Prof. Nelson Sewankambo, said there was an increasing demand for such services due to an increase in spinal cord and brain injuries in the country. He attributed the increase in the rate of injuries to bodaboda accidents and poor usage of vitamins for expectant mothers.
“We need to develop capacity to carry out complicated surgical procedures. It saves the country a lot of money, if the operation is carried out here,†said Sewankambo.
Sewankambo made the disclosure while meeting the President of Duke University, Richard H. Brodhead, at Makerere on Monday.
Sewakambo said the training would include programmes in neurosurgery, orthopedic training and training of nurses who will work with the surgeons.
“When you go to the US to train as a neurosurgeon, after qualifying as a doctor, it takes seven years for one to graduate. We can’t afford to have people going to the US for that long when we can train them here,†he added.
