We welcome elective medical students from other universities in Uganda and overseas.
This is a great opportunity to come and learn alongside Makerere medical students and enjoy the academic and social opportunities that Makerere University offers. The elective programme is organized by the Makerere University Medical School and placements are available in the Mulago Hospital and other hospitals affiliated to Makerere. Mulago hospital has an annual average inpatient of about 120,000 and attends to over 480,000 outpatients in the Assessment centre, General out-patients clinics, and Specialists clinics and in the Accident and Emergency department annually and delivers about 27,000 mothers per year.
We also have opportunities to work in smaller District Hospitals and clinics that allows you to spend one or two weeks of your elective in a rural community working at the local clinic and seeing first hand how traditional cultures and lack of resources impact on primary healthcare delivery. We provides a wide range of acute clinical services including an accident and emergency service, general Residents/medical students spend the morning on rounds with the team performing history and physical examinations. In addition, residents and medical students come up with differential diagnoses and form management plans (i.e. labs, imaging, and treatment). The afternoon is spent taking further care of the patients based on the plans made during morning rounds. There are also new patients who are admitted to each medical service. In addition, there are conferences, morning lectures, and journal club sessions for additional learning. Teaching peers is also a component to the programs
