The Simpson County School Board voted to purchase property on Highway 49 to build the new consolidated high school.
A special called meeting was held at noon on Tuesday with part of the reason was to move forward with the purchase of property for the school district to build the consolidated high school. The property is a 103 acre tract of land which was owned by Phillip Davis. The location of the property is just north of Howard Industries and south of Air South Heating and Cooling on Highway 49.
Final details of the sale have not been made. The vote was four to zero with everyone voting in favor of the moving forward with the land deal. Stacey Herrin was unable to attend the board meeting.
This is the same property that was rumored by the board as having been unsuitable with no specific reason as to why it was unsuitable.
Time was running out because the election was slotted for the end of March for the bond issue. Ballots are supposed to be prepared 45 days prior to the election.
According to Dr. Toriano Holloway, superintendent, the cost of the high school $51 million. $39 million is needed for the high school. $12 million would go toward a fine arts complex and athletic facilities. The balance of $10 million is Esser funding from the Federal Government is going to on-going project at Simpson Central as well as projects at Mendenhall Elementary. This was originally printed in error saying that the $22 million was to be used at the new high school. We, the newspaper, regret this error.
Additional details will be made available as they materialize. There will be survey, environmental study and other requirements before the deal is finalized. It should close within 60 days.
