NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - More people are coming to Comal County than almost anywhere else in the country.

According to recently released U.S. Census Bureau numbers, Comal County is the second fastest growing county in the country for the second year in a row.

But how is the Comal Independent School District preparing for so many more students?

Right now, there are already about 24,000 students in Comal ISD, and its growing at the rate of 900 students per year.

Comal ISD is building two new high schools - one in August 2020 and the other in 2021, as well as two new middle schools that will open this year. The district is also look into building more elementary schools in the near future.

The census data that came out is a good indicator of what' going on here, but the numbers that the school district uses to figure out how many schools and teachers they'll need is much more detailed.

A demographer that the school district contracts with also looks at how many homes are being purchased in the area and the price points of those homes, which gives a better indication on how many families with school-age children are moving in.

“We look as far as 10 years out because we need to plan for new facilities and how to move our boundaries if necessary or add portables," said Steve Sanford, director of communications with Comal ISD. "Whatever we need to do to accommodate these new students that are coming into our schools.”

The New Braunfels Independent School District is facing similar growth, even though that school district is significantly smaller, its still growing at about 3% per year.

Right now, NBISD is building a new school, a replacement school, and has an expansion underway at another school.
