I too have lived in Japan. The fact that I was occasionally treated by an outsider gave me the slightest hint of what people who do not look like me have to deal with all the time. But. I was never materially hurt in any way, shape, or form. It's not the same thing at all.

It's also different than having to deal with unwanted romantic/sexual attention and sexual harassment within a professional setting or community. Many people would probably receive both types of unwanted contact if they followed this advice. :(

This was a disappointing response to a legitimate concern. Is it so hard to imagine that making oneself easily available to contact is often not a safe choice? If your advice is only helpful to a small privileged population and harmful to others then maybe it's not so great.
