with leaders of 3 Baltic countries in Vilnius now.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda sets the tone: "Our determination, our ability to react, our ability to decide, will decide in which Europe we will live in the next decades..."

Wow, Scholz now with a very bold statement that won't survive a fact check:
"We will continue to support Ukraine with arms deliveries. Germany is doing this MORE INTENSIVELY THAN ALMOST ANYONE ELSE & will continue support as long as it's necessary to repel
aggression."

Confronted by a reporter with widespread criticism over
weapon deliveries, Scholz doubles down:
"Germany is one of the most important military supporters of Ukraine. No one else is providing as much as Germany is doing. There are a few that also do a lot, like the U.S."

Scholz, seemingly vexed, adds: "The considerable, massive and far-reaching support from Germany makes a very central contribution to Ukraine's ability to defend itself to this day."
Says there's an "accumulation of not quite correct claims" about lacking
support for

Asked whether he would approve export of German-made Leopard tanks from Spain to Ukraine (as Madrid is planning, according to El País), Scholz says "no such application has been received" by Berlin so far but vows to "carefully examine" a potentially forthcoming request.

Lithuanian Pres Nausėda spoke via an interpreter, so usual caveats apply, but it sounded like he replied to question about
weapon deliveries by saying that “it could be worse.”
But he acknowledged Scholz’s commitment to deliver more “according to the commitments made.”

Support for Scholz from Latvian Prime Minister Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš:
"Germany has been very, very helpful to Ukraine in this situation. Not only financially, but also militarily."

Clear divide between Scholz and Baltic leaders whether one should regularly speak to Putin via phone:
Chancellor said it's "of utmost importance" to tell Putin "again and again" that he can't impose a "dictated peace" in Ukraine & that EU sanctions will only be lifted...

...if there's a peace deal "that is right from the point of view" of the Ukrainian president, parliament and people. "That is what I am doing. Whoever holds such talks must be steadfast and have a clear point of view, and that is exactly the case when we talk to each other."

Yet the Baltic leaders push back against Scholz argument to talk to Putin.
Lithuania's Nausėda: "We in Lithuania think that it is impossible to talk to the leader of a state that is trying to redraw the European map in the 21st century."

Latvia's Kariņš: "Putin will only start talks when he realizes that he's starting to lose the war. So we have to give him this impression."
Estonia's Kallas: "We should not worry so much about what Putin wants, but rather about how we can help Ukraine to continue fighting."

Scholz about risk of famine in Africa due to blocked Ukrainian grain exports: "It is Russia's responsibility that this danger exists. It is not the sanctions, it is the Russian war against Ukraine that is causing us to have these problems now."

Scholz said the U.N. and partners are "trying to find solutions" to exporting grains from Odessa but stressed that any potentially cleared transport routes through the Black Sea must not be "misused for Russian military aggression against Ukraine through these corridors."

Here's our story: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday was again forced to fend off criticism over Germany’s arms deliveries to Ukraine and his insistence on talking to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Beim Schwindeln erwischt.
