many aspects of the internet are bad but Wikipedia remains an amazing resource. rarely do i make it a full day without looking up something, someone, or someplace, and that's been the case for two decades now.

I give them money literally every single time they ask. An absolutely essential part of the internet.

I gave my kids some of their child tax credit money to make donations last year. My daughter gave a chunk of hers to Wikipedia and she was so proud to do it.

They are not: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Guy_
They are struggling with a lack of editors, with retaining highly active editors and with developing the many issues/wishes for the underlying MediaWiki software,
but not with donated money...the WMF still just wastes it on efficient things

Best place to read episode info on my favorite shows! I have to front load on any show where they may be talking in an accent.

Just wait until Musk buys Wikipedia and decides it's a free speech zone where anyone can post anything unchecked.

I hope Jeff Bezos doesn't decide to start buying internet stuff now. He's always seemed like a kid that wanted to have a toy that the other kid had.

It’s a great resource.
People mock it.
But those are people who also don’t read real encyclopedias.

I don’t get why it’s mocked. If you’re doing real research, go to better sources. If you’re just looking for an overview, it’s fine. You can also check the citations.

Omg! We had to look it up in an encyclopedia that was probably a few years out of date.

Essential. Instead of banning Wikipedia from my classroom, I taught my students how entries are created and managed. And yes, I also love to select “random” and see what new thing I can learn.

It's always a good starting place for research. I'm an aged pensioner and I donate every time they ask.

Mixed bag in my experience, but I have been impressed by the erudition of articles on subjects I know something about. These subjects tend, incidentally, not to be politically or polemically charged.

It’s so reliable because it posts all of its sources which are always credible.

I always donate a small amount when they ask.

I had a professor from college say Wikipedia is a great starting point, because you can use the references below and use the ones that were peer reviewed. I still use it today.

Some public educators still knock it like it’s Reddit or something. I always say when I encounter that thinking, that there are citations in it with external links to all those reputable sources you remember. Same mindset still harps on teaching writing in script.

Agree 100%. Since the creation of Wikipedia I can say with certainty my life has changed immensely.
Then to remember it’s a completely free to user resource with unlimited amounts of information is simply just…

It’s like the one future/tech thing that hasn’t become dystopian in nature.
We must protect it.

That’s because it’s never sold out for profit, and it must remain that way!
