The native-stone jail in downtown Marathon was built in the 1880s to serve Buchel County, a county that never came into existence. Marathon was to be the county seat.

MARATHON - Driving from Houston or Austin (or from almost anywhere) to this scruffy, little town on the eastern edge of Big Bend territory is a long haul.
