ALABASTER, Ala (WIAT) — Parents and students are using their summer to look for another school to attend after the announcement of Kingwood Christian School closing.
Kingwood Christian School has been open for 40 years and announced it’s closing on May 30 due to unsustainable growth in enrollment.
Parents and student told CBS 42 they’re still in shock and sad to hear the school closing.
The lead pastor at Kingwood Church, Jay West, said they hired an outside consultant years ago and it was discovered the enrollment numbers have been declined for around 8 years.
Parents said they’re exploring private and public schools.
“Change is part of life so embrace life change and find the good fit. Some may go public and some may go to private schools and I have to commend both schools for embracing the nature for these kids. I know Evangel Christian, Cornerstone Christian, and Bessemer Academy have opened their enrollment registration, that was closed, to allow families to have the opportunity to transition and find what’s the best fit,” said Carrie Davis, whose three children attended Kingwood Christian.
Shelby County school officials said they’ve had nine KCS students transfer to their school district. Cornerstone Christian said they’re receiving inquiries from students.
