We're in a similar situation, especially in behavioral genetics. The field has been revitalized by new methods. Some are trying to move away from the deterministic past but the break is not clean or easy. The work is also feeding a resurgent race science4/

This stuff from Lewontin, Gould et al has value, but I think its impact was limited by the explicit avowed socialism, in the middle of the Cold War. People on the Right did chain-of-association games linking socialism to repressive communism, the crimes of Stalin/Mao, etc

I totally agree, hopefully being a few decades from the cold war makes it more palatable because personally, I find that part of the analysis some of the most convincing for a unified understanding of the whole situation.
