A running in both the 2020 film Sonic the Hedgehog and the 2022 sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has been the iconic video game character's fondness for the Olive Garden restaurant.
In a recent Sonic the Hedgehog 2 interview with Fandom, screenwriter Pat Casey acknowledged the many Olive Garden gags in the first movie, but said that it wasn't really legitimate endorsement of the product. Instead, the team behind the film just thought it would be fun, and kept growing.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 again features the voice of Parks and Recreation veteran Ben Schwartz as the titular speedster. Joining him are James Marsden (Westworld), Tika Sumpter (Ride Along), Natasha Rothwell (Wonder Woman 1984), Adam Pally (The Mindy Project) and Jim Carrey (Kidding).
The sequel's additional cast includes franchise newcomers Shemar Moore, Colleen O'Shaughnessey and Idris Elba, the latter two to respectively voice the roles of Tails and Knuckles.
The sequel was directed by Jeff Fowler from a script written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Neal H. Mortiz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara return to produce, while Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi, and Tim Miller executive produce.

"A lot of it wasn't product placement," Casey said with a laugh. “The Olive Garden thing… Olive Garden didn't pay us for it, it was just a joke. It was just a little thing, and then it just seemed to keep growing on set when I wasn't there, they kept adding more references to Olive Garden, I don't know. Originally the joke was just the general giving them a shitty gift card at the end, and then it turned into everything. He came back early in the movie.”

SEGA has announced through an official press release that on May 20 it will withdraw from stores the original versions of the classics included in Sonic Origins, a compilation of the first games in the saga that will go on sale at a price of 39.99 euros in Spain just a month later, on June 23. There are certain exceptions, but the general idea is that Sonic classics will no longer be available in their original version.
The film grossed 323 million dollars, of which it collected 161 million dollars at the American box office, 162 million dollars in the foreign market, and a production cost of 85 million dollars. According to Box Office Mojo.
The film revolves around Sonic the Hedgehog, who came from another world to planet Earth, to escape from malevolent forces that seek to harness his super speed for their evil purposes. After accidentally causing a power outage on the planet, he is targeted by the US government, which has hired the genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) to hunt him down. Meanwhile, ex-officer Tom decides to help Sonic escape and protect him from Robotnik.
"The company will withdraw the digital versions of the independent titles that will appear in the next game, Sonic Origins, on May 20, 2022. This includes: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD", we can read in the statement published by SEGA. Although the company has not specified which digital platforms will no longer have these versions.
It has detailed the exceptions to this decision: for example, the first two Sonic The Hedgehog will continue to be available on Switch through its SEGA AGES version, while Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will continue to be playable through the Sega Genesis on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
Currently, the installments that make up this compilation are available on digital distribution platforms such as Steam, where, for example, we can buy the first Sonic the Hedgehog for 4.49 euros in Spain, or the Xbox Store, where games like Sonic CD are available for just 4, 79 euros in our country. This will change on May 20, when the only way to get them is through this new compilation of improved classics.
All of these games have undergone a remastering process for Sonic Origins, which includes improvements such as the ability to play in widescreen (16:9) and unlimited life, as well as high resolution graphics, new animations, more missions and unlockables that they range from new content to special stages in the museum, as well as challenges and a new mirror mode.
In addition, the collection includes a series of additional content that can be accessed by reserving it or with the subsequent purchase of some DLCs that have also brought controversy to this collection that was intended to serve as a tribute to the 31 years of adventures of the blue hedgehog.
Sonic the hedgehog 2, the sequel to one of the big surprises of 2020, this week became the highest-grossing video game adaptation in history in the United States.
The film surpassed its predecessor, as announced by actor Ben Schwartz, who provides the voice of the protagonist. "Sonic 2 just officially passed the first film's total gross, officially making the sequel the highest-grossing movie based on a video game in the local market in history," the actor wrote.

It is worth noting that the sequel, which has grossed more than 148 million dollars, is far from being the most successful film of the genre in the rest of the world.
That medal is still held by Warcraft, which exceeded 439 million dollars globally, although it was a resounding failure in the United States, where it barely stepped on 47 million.

Sonic 2 grossed just over $291 million worldwide, making it clear what the studios' priority is when greenlighting sequels, the first, for example, was close to $320 million.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hasn't even been out for a month, and it's safe to say that it has already been a huge success for everyone involved. Namely, SEGA and Paramount Pictures.
The sequel is nearing $300 million in sales (via Deadline), currently sitting at $287 million. This is already more than the original Sonic the Hedgehog film from 2020, and makes it the highest grossing video game movie of all time.
It appears that the blue hedgehog has seen significant popularity in the UK, and with the movie due to launch in the Middle East next week and Japan in August, Sonic is going to continue to take the global box office by storm.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, we witness Sonic and Tails embark on a journey to locate the Master Emerald. However, they have their work cut out for them when Knuckles the Echidna and Dr. Eggman are hot on their tails.
The film is a win for video-game movies, as Alex discussed in his review of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. SEGA and Paramount Pictures have employed and enhanced the source material from the video-games, without steering away from it too much. Things are fun, the Sonic formula is there, and it's no wonder that the film has been such a success on the big screen.
