sometimes I wonder if how Ka's form has changed has effected anyone who knew him before. If they were repulsed by it thinking the original was better. He is a lot happier and mentally healthier after canon, but it was always part of the plan that he would get stronger once he was given love and care

He was not meant to be so frail. His brother was a big, strong dude, as was his father. He had the genetics for it, he was just..sad and not taking care of himself

Anonymous asked:

Sorry if this has been asked already, but what is the size comparison between the Vhasshlans and the humans? Mainly between Nenani and Jae with the castle staff?

diddlesanddoodles answered:

I waited to answer this ask because as I am working on the next draft, I came to the conclusion that I needed to changed it.

Essentially I went down a rabbit hole of fantasy economics, anthropology, and socialology. And decided my giants were just a hit too big (Blasphemy!)

But as my story does have politics as an aspect to the plot, having the economics make sense is important to me. Maybe not 100% accurate, but logical at least.

In the posted story, my giants are 27-30 plus feet. In my new draft, they’re 18-24 feet tall. I wanted to more easily blend human and giant interactions. My base measurement was that a 6 foot human man standing next to the tallest giant would come up just above the giant’s knee and my previous heights were off a good bit on that.

Also, I liked to use the recent BFG movie as a good reference for scale. BFG is 24 feet tall and was right at the sort of proportions I wanted. Humans could move about in a giant sized environment without it being so ridiculously daunting, but still a challenge.

The way I dealt with fantasy economics in a world I built (and abandoned...) was by making giant food indigestible by humans. Cattle can digest cellulose and thus have access to a much larger supply of food than humans (grass!). But they can only digest cellulose through a complex sequence of multiple stomachs, regurgitation, rumination, and with the help of specialized bacteria. Instead of giant food flooding the human economy, humans just can't digest giant food. Similarly, giant textiles are too rough for human purposes (imagine a sweater made of rope), and so on for different goods. Thus, humans have a mostly separate economy that hasn't been ruined by cheap giant goods.

Obviously this doesn't work in Dumpling, which is set in a dang kitchen! But I wanted to share how I got around the "how do you keep enormous giants fed" and "how does the economy even function" problems.

diddlesanddoodles

My get around is that giant’s physical labor is more expensive (they can get more done) and charge accordingly. But I love the idea that their textiles would be too rough for humans and made of rope. Brilliant idea.

One idea I came up with was that giants would eat some strange things that human generally would not. Like some varieties of trees. And in the same way that we tap maple trees for sap to make syrup, they would use a similar process to make sugar. Also, roasted sunflower heads is a thing so I’m using that as well.

Also, cheese and butter are not something they themselves can produce so they’re always imported from humans. But the butter has to be shelf stable, so instead of fresh butter they have something closer to ghee.
