It’s kind of fascinating but also disturbing to watch in real time Japanese officials pushing their version of the history of Japan’s imperialism and wartime behavior and people going along with them.

No diplomat in Germany or Italy would worry about Hitler or Mussolini being mentioned in this way. It’s an encapsulation of so much of Japan’s postwar history that this is not the case regarding Hirohito

It's really concerning to see how many people share this view as well.

It’s simple, if even bringing the emperor up in a historical discussion about defeating fascism and its allies is tantamount to diplomatic 不敬罪, then it’s clear Japan *wasn’t* defeated and the video is in error
(also a fun window into US-Japan relations)

Amazing. My grandgrandma was killed by Ukrainians who collaborated with nazi at the time of WW2 because she was Jewish.

Because Franco wasn't defeated in 1945.

What the Japanese did was horrible, but Hirohito was not responsible. Again, Japan is still actively denying its atrocities and should be condemned, but Hirohito never contributed to them, and even tried to stop them. His attempts were unsuccessful because his life was threatened

Hirohito was a figurehead. On paper he did hold a lot of power, but he was never able to use that because of his constant (well founded) fear of assassination. Ironically, he faced being assassinated in his name.

The Japanese government pretends that the Tripartite Pact did not exist.
The Japanese government refuses to acknowledge the war crimes committed by the Empire of Japan in World War II.

Not surprised as Japan has long been monopolistically controlled by a powerful group of totalitarians whose ideology and actions are comparable to Putin's regime. It is unclear why Ukraine sided with the same kind of people they are fighting against.

I regret my silence, couldn't say anything while the racists in my country won in this case. I just fear for myself.
Now, I have to know how to defeat racism. It is too late, but still I have to stop them. Must have to.

afaik Hirohito spent most of these years basically under house arrest with very little knowledge to none of what was going on elsewhere, shouldn't it be a picture of hideki tojo

Shame on Nippon Kaigi's right-wing Masahisa Sato, who claimed "untruth of our history" that Hirohito wasn't responsible for the WWII attacked & war accountability.
Hence Hirohito refused to agree to the Potsdam Declaration because of fear "not to be admired as the godess"

The way, they are they still peddling their lies in the age of Wikipedia and social media. Depressing.
Anyway, Japan invaded China in 1931 and Korea was ruled as "part of Japan" from 1910 to 1945.

what's Japan's point here? Being a great ally is not an excuse for ignoring the past. What's the "historical facts" for them?
I don't think the later generation is responsible for it, but they should at least acknowledge it - they don't understand the differences

They're not wrong about Emperor Hirohito though. He was a mostly powerless figurehead who actually brought an end to the war against the military's wishes. A soldier tried to break into the palace to stop him.

Equating Hirohito (a figurehead with little actual political power) with Mussolini and Hitler is bad history.
Tojo would be the more analogous figure.

Not really. Tojo was a military bureaucrat not a charismatic leader with his own power base outside the existing political establishment. In July, 1944, he was told he should spend more time with his family. He resigned on the 22nd.
