He is a proud Orange American. The only one. How dare you laugh at a person's skin color. Imagine you wake up one day as orange as a ripe tangerine? Very sad situation.

Trump is our best friend - whenever he opens his mouth, Europeans unite in opposition to him.

Actually, this is my only hope - that his arrogance and stupidity causes such as strong reaction in terms of counter-tariffs, diplomatic blowback, etc., that this will give even more ammunition to the Democrats here in the US to have an overwhelming victory in the November election.

I remember when he was elected there was a post with hundreds of upvotes on r/europe whose title called for the unification of the European army, and linking to a military montage video featuring a creepy background song featuring lyrics like "swastikas rising in times of expanse".

Oh, found it.

Well, both US and EU massively subsidy their farmers and both have overproduction.

So it's fair to say that EU protects their farmers, but it's unfair to pretend that US doesn't.

He never cared about the objective facts or real data. All his statements are just his own view of the world, based on no data or facts, and designed only to energize his supporters and his base. He often invents facts just to make a point. He casually inflates the trade deficit numbers and makes up economic data. For example, he often says that Canada takes advantage of the US on trade, even though US has a trade surplus with Canada. It just does not make sense to even ask this question. He has proven over and over again that most of his statements are not actual. It is very weird and unusual, but this guy is that populist liar you would normally only read about in the history books.

23

Yeah, but he's probably referring to countries exporting goods to the US, where China is somewhat larger player than the EU. All EU countries combined actually only trade about as much with the US as either Canada or Mexico does individually. Which makes it even weirder that Trump is pissing off both of them at the same time. Those two countries are super important for US trade.

18
level 2

Second after the USA, but the EU is not very unified.

40
level 2

I think he refers to the trade deficit we have with the EU. Its smaller than China but it's still there.

7

GDP only tells so much, in this case the more interesting numbers would be trade volume (US-China vs. US-EU) as well as capital investments (EU/China investments in the US).

This guy is so incredibly stupid. Seriously, who would want to buy an American car? Their products target a complete different audience. The majority of European roads are just too small for pickups trucks. Their cars are using too much fuel for our expensive gas prices. And we are actually importing quite a lot of cars from the USA. BMW is the largest auto exporter in the USA and I start to see more and more Tesla in Germany.

Lots of people, to be fair. It's just that they're manufactured here in the EU and Trumplet doesn't like that. Also, apparently nobody told him that European and Asian brands don't import all that many cars to the US either, they make them there on the spot.

Actually, some of the BWMs, Audis and other German brands made int he US are exported: https://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/money/2018/02/13/bmw-manufacturing-remains-leading-u-s-auto-exporter-despite-pros-2017-exports-decline-amid-overall-s/333490002/

Trump's voters don't want to just consume. They want to manufacture and sell goods too. People can't spend money that they don't have forever, at some point other people will stop lending them money.

Income inequality in China plays a major role however, with the poorest sectors of Chinese society being significantly poorer than those of American society.

Furthermore, per capita is kind of irrelevant when we are referring to the power a country wields, and China is dominating manufacture and other major fiscal industries.

A 2.5% vs 10% tariff on a product with average price of 40,000 amounts to a difference of 3,000.

That is significant, and it should be rectified because it is unfair, but I think that other factors help explain why American cars are not popular in EU.

As for foodstuff... In the US I studiously avoid certain USA products because of the regulatory regime here. Beef raised with ractopamine? No thanks, will not buy it if I never have beef again. When the label says “born, raised, harvested in the USA,” I look elsewhere. Or roundup ready crops. Do not buy soybeans or corn unless it is organic.

As an American, I am very happy that the EU does not allow this stuff inside their borders. Hopefully the awareness level in the US will rise as well.

Not this pathetic bullshit again.
Yes, you're USA, and are completely uneducated about this stuff, just like the usual Trump-following shitsack.

What is the EU tariff on trucks? 10%.
What is the USA tariff on trucks? 25%. See many EU trucks in USA? And EU offered to change the tariffs, CARS INCLUDED, in.. an international trade deal. Which Trump pulled the USA out of.
What's the USA import tariff on Train wagons? 14%? vs 2-3% EU?
On Tobacco and things it's 200-300%.

The US of A has the highest amount of protective measures.
And as for any agricultural tariffs the EU has: US of A massively sponsors it's sugar industry. So it wouldn't be fair not to put some limits on imports from USA.

My favorite example however:
how many non-USA sand-bagger ships, does the US of A employ?
The answer, is ZERO.
There's no 'tariff', but there's USA regulation, that ANY sand-bagger ship used in USA waters, must be made in USA, and flying USA flag.
And the result is you have shit-tier sand-bagging equipment fyi.
Sure, make the trade 'more fair', start with the shit USA regulations.

How lovely the article doesn't mention the arguments he made to prove his point: the EU cares about its car manufacturers and farmers and uses protectionist measures to help them - the US doesn't. It's a 30 second clip, yet they didn't bother to list that - just do the clickbait to rile up people who don't know how to check sources.

But you could argue against him using these points. While I don't know much about car situation (maybe raise tarrifs to equivalent levels on this, Donald?), the farming situation is way more complicated than just "they don't want any foreign products". If he believes the US should be as 'smart' as the EU, maybe he should bring in the subsidies? I mean, if we're smart according to him, then it would be smart of him to copy that model or make a better one?

It is a bit of a one-sided view because USA is also protectionist, although in different areas. It has, e.g. extremely restricted rules in airline market. EU (or parts of Asia) market is way more competitive. Then, there is a "buy American" law for tax-funded projects.
