If you call yourself an animator, and you haven’t digested these books…. Then you’re a fake.

A fake is a less than genuine imitation of life. An illusion, suspends disbelief and creates magic human moments, even in brevity.

I spent a semester using my free day just meticulously doing like 95% of the exercises from the RWilliams one, but I never checked out the second properly. Guess I gotta sometime

Frank and Ollie defined the lifestyle of an animator. Richard williams adopted the lifestyle and showed us practical application.

What? I have gone through these books, but lets be clear they teach you how to animate disney style. Anime breaks some of these rules. And anime animation is pretty solid

Not solid. It’s a style.

Survival Kit is good, but I haven't learned anything practical from Illusion of Life. Same goes to Elemental Magic for VFX. Essential Effects was much more useful.
Which brings to mind, could you make a book like survival kit on VFX? There really isn't one to this day.

Hello. Essential Effects is Mauro Maressa's book?

The ppl who wrote those books drew on paper, and wrote those books for ppl who draw on paper (although the advice is still good for digital) so dw about being able to draw digital :)

So what is your definition of a person being fake? I have successfully been in the animation industry for more than 8 years and never read these books.

It’s just tired gatekeeping. Nobody who calls people fake is worth listening to.
Richard Williams’s book is great. Illusion of life’s principles of animation are good, but they’re available in other books, without all the nonsense about doing things The Disney Way.

I've owned The Illusion of Life for 20yrs and haven't read mote than a few pages. Hell, I owned two copies for most of that time because they were slightly different editions.
Read The Animator's Survival Kit cover-to-cover twice, though.

I think the ASK is the bible of animation, and like the actual bible it works best if you don't take it too literally.. the walk examples in any case ;)

I dead ass feel like Ryan just trolled the shit out of everyone in the animation industry. I’m over here laughing at everyone. The level of troll here is downright genius! I’m watching a master at work! It’s like the magnum opus of trolling. It’s beautiful…. It’s so beautiful.

There’s one there I would whole heartedly recommend, the Disney one has too much er… Disney in it. Other books cover the subject without the propaganda.

Seriously, the Disney book is useful for teaching "how to animate like a disney movie", but anyone who thinks Disney's the only model for good animation or even always follows its own guidelines can suck an egg.

I'm a fake! I read Survival Kit, wasn't able to digest it at the time, my skills got there slowly, by trial & errors and workin w/ peers (like Williams did before writing his book). Never read the Disney one, I'm probably missing something, but I assure you (humbly) I can animate

It sure makes better tweet, but I'm just not a fan of BIG HARD (set in stone) rules/affirmation! Might be the bibles that lead you where YOU are going, but they're not the only ressources/ways to become an animator IMHO

We live in a time where peers, online courses and even youtube can provide in-depth knowledge. I don’t own the books, I learned by collaborating with friends and sneaking in classes

So Chuck Jones was not an animator? Nick Park neither? No animators at Studio Gibli? Maybe limit your hot takes?

Huh? I didn’t mention those brilliant animators in that light. Talk about gaslighting. Damn.

Everybody develops their skills differently, just because they didn’t take the same route as you has nothing to with their ability. It is frankly insulting to call them fakes.

This reminds me of those guys who put you on the spot to explain all the principles of animation and you're like
Ease in, ease out
Anticipation
Appeal
B...bigness
Pose to pose
Sneezy
...Ease out, ease in
Fastness
And then they sneer at you despite your 47 media accreditations

I'm a fake. Skimmed both books - TOO MANY WORDS - uggh. I'll occasionally reference William's for different walk cycles. Preston Blair was enough to keep me gainfully employed for the last two decades as an animator. The Eric Goldberg book is pretty neat too.

Too many words???? Hahahahaha! How the hell is that even a reasonable argument?
