About COVID-19 vaccines and vaccination
Vaccination programs, primary series and booster doses
Vaccination programs
- COVID-19 vaccination began in Canada on December 14, 2020.
- 7 COVID-19 vaccines are currently approved for use in Canada.
- The COVISHIELD version of the AstraZeneca vaccine is no longer used in Canada as the interim order for its use expired on September 16, 2021.
- The National Advisory Committee on Immunization’s (NACI) recommendations on the use of COVID-19 vaccines can be found in the latest NACI statements.
- People 5 years and older without contraindications to the vaccine are currently eligible for COVID-19 vaccination.
Primary series
- 2-dose vaccines: Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty® (two formulations, one for those aged 12 and older and another one for those aged 5 to 11 years), Moderna Spikevax® (6 to 11 years and 12 and older), AstraZeneca Vaxzevria® (18 and older), Novavax Nuvaxovid® (18 and older) and Medicago Covifenz® (18 to 64).
- People who have received only 1 dose are considered partially vaccinated.
- People who have received both doses are considered fully vaccinated.
- Moderately to severely immunocompromised people who have received an additional dose of an mRNA vaccine are considered fully vaccinated.
- 1-dose vaccine: Janssen (18 and older)
- People who have received only 1 dose are considered fully vaccinated.
- Moderately to severely immunocompromised people who have received an additional dose of an mRNA vaccine are considered fully vaccinated.
Booster doses
NACI recommends a booster dose of an mRNA vaccine at least 6 months after the primary series is completed for members of the following populations.
- A booster should be offered to:
- adults 50 years of age and older
- adults living in long-term care homes for seniors or other congregate living settings that provide care for seniors
- people who completed their series with only viral vector vaccines (the AstraZeneca Vaxzevria/COVISHIELD or Janssen COVID-19 vaccines)
- adults in or from First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities
- all frontline health care workers who have direct in-person contact with patients
- A booster may be offered to:
- adults 18 to 49 years of age
- adolescents 12 to 17 years of age:
- with an underlying medical condition at high risk of severe illness due to COVID-19 (including those who are immunocompromised and who received a 3-dose primary series)
- who are residents of congregate living settings (e.g., shelters, group homes, quarters for migrant workers, correctional facilities)
- who belong to racialized and/or marginalized communities disproportionately affected by COVID-19

Notes
- The “Fully vaccinated” and “Fully vaccinated with an additional dose” categories are not mutually exclusive.
- Eligibility for booster dose programs varies across provinces and territories.
- Information is subject to change. Numbers may differ in provincial and territorial reports due to the timing of updates and the suppression of values less than 5 for 7 provinces and territories (see limitations).
- Use caution when comparing data over time. Reporting delays can result in artificial increases in weekly counts while ongoing data quality assurance activities can result in unexpected decreases.
- Cumulative vaccination coverage data for the population aged 5 and older is available from June 5, 2021 onwards.
- The number and percentage of people partially vaccinated will decrease as people become fully vaccinated.

- The “Fully vaccinated” and “Fully vaccinated with an additional dose” categories are not mutually exclusive.
- Eligibility for booster dose programs varies across provinces and territories.
- British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Yukon and the Northwest Territories calculate age based on the time of the report. This may result in a decrease in a given age group's vaccination coverage over time as vaccine recipients move to the next age group category.
- Information is subject to change. Numbers may differ in provincial and territorial reports due to the timing of updates and the suppression of values less than 5 for 7 provinces and territories (see limitations).
- Some children less than 5 years old may be reported as being vaccinated because they are turning 5 this calendar year or due to data entry errors.
