Held every year in the fall, the Nikkei Global Management Forum is the most prestigious event organized by Nikkei Inc., Japan's leading media for business. Some 20 executives from around the world gather for two days to discuss critical issues while offering their own insight. Since the first forum held in 1999, Nikkei Global Management Forum was attended by Jack Welch, Chairman and CEO of General Electric; Fujio Mitarai, President and CEO of Canon; Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO of Google; and Jack Ma, Chairman and CEO of Alibaba Group and many other global business leaders. In 2019, the podium was graced by Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, Chairman Emeritus of Nestlé; and Tadashi Yanai, Chairman, President and CEO of Fast Retailing (all job titles are as of time of event).
This year’s forum will be streamed live to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The world’s top business leaders will connect online to discuss what the roles and contributions of corporations are in a world facing unprecedented change amidst the COVID-19 crisis, and what impact this has on corporate management and human resource development.
The global economy suffered as the spread of COVID-19 interrupted the movement of goods and people across borders, creating economic stagnation and division. Many global market suppliers experienced a sharp decline in sales, while airlines and department stores were hit hard by restrictions on social gatherings and travel.
As the virus changes the way we work and conduct business, there has been a push to digitize operations, increasing demand for telecommunications and other electronics equipment. Major pharmaceutical companies are competing to develop vaccines while an increasing number of companies make contributions to support health care professionals and face mask production.
As social distancing is likely to continue in order to curb the spread of the virus, business executives are forced to find new ways to promote business growth within a “new normal.”
