Americans’ hate boner for expansionist great powers knows no bounds
Sadly, beyond accepting refugees (which we should absolutely do), any intervention in Burma/Myanmar is impossible. It borders China and there is no way they would accept a foreign military presence there.
As for Ethiopia... what could we do beyond support a UN peacekeeping mission?
No it doesn't matter that direct intervention has mostly been proven to be effective in wars of aggression and less effective in civil wars.
I'm not that well informed on these horrific conflicts, but they're internal, no? The US shouldn't go around invading other countries, especially if not in our best interest.
I think a lot of the distinction here is that more people in the USA are, by one or two degrees of separation, personally affected by what’s happening in ukraine. More people here have friends, family, coworkers or colleagues who are in or from Ukraine. I mean, some of it almost certainly is racial and a lot of people here are just racist, but that’s not the entirety of it. There’s very few personal connections here to the Rohingya. Not saying that makes it okay or anything, but I think it explains a lot.
It's like there are a lot of Americans with European family members. When the event impacts people you know it affects you more. That this is news to you is funny.
What? Where? The average American is several generations divorced from Europe.
And even then that's not an excuse for that rhetoric. I have actual immediate family members (uncles, aunts, nieces) in Ethiopia and you don't hear me saber rattling.
For those of you who are new here, r/place was a thing Reddit did where you could draw on a 1000 by 1000 pixel canvas, one pixel at a time. And this year, for April Fools' Day, Reddit has decided to bring it back. Here’s the Wikipedia article if you care: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Place_(Reddit)
On this canvas, people all across Reddit collaborated to make pixel art, and now I believe the time has come for this subreddit to do likewise. But what to draw?
With such limited space, we need to paint something both visually interesting and recognizable. It must also be simple enough to be drawn by a large group of people. Although we only have 132K members, we are one of the most active subreddits in terms of comments per day. We can certainly do this if we all put effort into it.
All this being considered, here's my proposal:
Here is the proposal which received the most upvotes, the one we will be drawing:
Credit to u/InternetBoredom for the art
We can 100% do this if we all commit. Make sure to be ready by April 1st!
This is getting traction, so I think it's best to establish a few details
We will be drawing the image at the coordinates Y = 650 X = 650, near the top right corner. If you look at the previous r/place heatmap, it's clear this area was much less active.
Far fewer subs seem to be organizing this year. /pol/ and /b/ don't even seem to know it's happening. The admins are also gonna be a lot stricter with bots this year. This all means it's possible we could finish the drawing rather quickly. In which case, there are a few things we need you to do.
Draw tacos everywhere around the art
Fix any vandalism on our art
Vandalize any nazi or tankie shit you see
We are not dickheads so we won't be using bots, so we need you to just keep r/place open in another tab and add a pixel every 10 minutes or so.
Lastly, make sure to help out our friends over at r/globaltribe (1) and r/noncredibledefense (2) with their art if you get a chance.

TL:DR - read the fucking post it isn't that long mate
So five or six years ago it was obvious. Neoliberalism was Obama-Biden bromance memes, white pantsuits, dijon mustard on my hot dogs, yass-Queening Samantha Bee stanning for Hillary or dunking on Trump, and listening to the Ezra Klein show on Vox while doing chores around my compact high-rise apartment overlooking a dense, walkable neighbourhood.
But now everyone is wearing aviator glasses and eating ice cream - what's up with that? I'm so lost now it seems like neoliberal style is no longer defined by two powerful short blonde women. Also, what's a substack? Ezra Klein is at the NYT, like wtf? And why haven't I seen a good article from the Atlantic in forever? What happened to David Frum? Are tan suits still a thing? I used an Obama meme in a chat with someone a few days back and they literally rolled their eyes and said I was cringe and should get on TikTok.
I don't mean to go all 'can I copy your homework' on you guys but I'm really scared I won't make it.
