The U.S. isn’t buying Putin’s peace offering. They’re also shocked at how bad his army has performed, so much so they’re doing a review of their own intel to figure out how they got their assessment on Russia so wrong.

It is better to overestimate your opponent than to underestimate them.

To a point. Just ask General McClellan.

But keep pouring that money into the DoD budget. It’s all we can afford at the cost of Americans health and well being

I'm convinced the Russian Vor has been selling off "the good stuff", and all that's left of their war materials are the window-dressing and the stuff that no one would buy.
The Russian military seems, aptly enough, to be a Potemkin force.

The only russian things that performed well in their wars: missiles and lies.
Their lies don't work anymore, now it's time to stop their missiles.

Perhaps just inevitable in a kleptocracy - everything that isn't nailed down eventually gets stolen. The military is going to suffer from that as much as any other institution.

Putin: we’re getting our ass kicked so we are going to say we are willing to resume negotiations while we regroup, reposition and reinforce our troops! Lets hope Ukraine doesn’t fall for the Bull Shit.
it took Russia years to subdue Chechnya and Chechnya had no foreign aid and only has 1.2 million people. the only shocking thing was how Russia hasn't achieved air superiority but with things like Starstreak missiles coming in they are unlikely to at all.

What's surprising? The CIA overestimated Soviet capabilities straight through to 1989.

It’s hard to actually account for corruption and incompetence.
Trusting Putin to keep his word is like the frog trusting the scorpion who wanted a ride across the river.
Was it the same intel folks who said Drumpf would never be president in 2016?

US intel is used to justify US military spending. Tougher enemy justifies greater spending. That’s how they got it “wrong”.
Do you think that it might have something to do with the fact that our advisors have been training (on their home turf), and now equipping, the Ukrainians for the past eight years?
There is absolutely no reason to buy ANYTHING that Putin has to say about.. anything.
Overestimating Russia was wishful thinking to excuse the West’s inertia
If Russia does one thing effortlessly, it’s deceive.

They didn’t get it wrong. The government has always hyped Russia’s military expertise as an excuse to pump trillions of dollars into the defense industry.

I'd imagine it's because the US naively assumes that everyone else will take things like logistics, maintenance, engineering and a reliable, committed NCO corps, as seriously as it does.
