I actively disliked Dark Souls (poor controls, asshole game design, obtuse systems).
Whereas I absolutely *loved* God of War, despite being similar genre games.
Will I like Elden Ring? At face value, it looks way more like Dark Souls, so I suspect not, but maybe?

I feel this; my determining factor is that I've come to terms that I dislike high difficulty and Elden seems to lean into it. I'm staying away until I read a review address it and so far everything I read references how challenging it is :(
Yes, but has that generational leap improved its controls/design/systems substantially?

I've seen enough reviews from other people who actively disliked Dark Souls praising it that it seems at least worth a try

I'm surprised you'd even put God of War in the same category. Lord knows I wouldn't.
Elden Ring is essentially Dark Souls if it were an Elder Scrolls game from what I understand. Way more open-world in design than previous games in the Souls series.

I don't know where on the From continuum Elden Ring lands, but I felt Sekiro had much more thoughtful, player-friendly design than Dark Souls did (while still offering a souls-tier challenge).
With luck Elden Ring keeps those learned lessons even as it goes back to a Souls feel.

I have occasionally in the past, but not any time recently.

God of War gave more options for playstyle and the most punishing fights (Valkyrie IMO) were entirely optional. GoW was also extremely tight in controls compared to how Dark Souls felt.

if you found the design “asshole” then probably not! still very committed to the same design principles, and that might not be your bag.
controls/systems, though: controls have come a LONG way since dark souls 1, and so far (couple hours) systems are pretty thoroughly explained

and maybe needless to say but i think elden ring (and any souls game) is well worth your effort if you’re willing to dive in. they’re not antagonistic so much unforgiving. you just gotta learn from your mistakes to make progress, and when you do you feel incredible!

“ThEn UR NoT a REaL DeSigNeRRR”
I literally had a coworker say that to me for sharing similar opinions of souls games. Heh.
I’m going to give Elden Ring a shot. But I’m not optimistic.

The emphasis in combat is different (GoW makes you feel strong, Souls makes you feel weak) and the difference in narrative presentation and emphasis....they're honestly not at all comparable despite how close it looks on the surface. They can both still be good games though.

The big difference is, when you put the time in and start getting good at dark souls, you make yourself feel strong instead of the game doing it for you.

I've played every soulsborne game they've released except ds2, and i think the 2 biggest and ONLY offenders of "asshole" design are demon souls and ds1. If you've played other fromsoft games and thought the design was still "asshole"-like then it might not be for you (1/2)

(2/2) That being said, I genuinely believe that anyone who plays video games can beat a fromsoft game. No matter who they are. The games takes a different approach to teaching, but in turn that makes these games feel immensely satisfying. I know you can do it if you stick with it

From a person who also doesn't like Dark Souls, it's more Dark Souls.
The world is REALLY interesting, but I am not sure if I can get over my disdain for Dark Souls to keep me actively engaged in the world.

There's a designated jump button though. If you enjoyed any part of Dark Souls 3 stuff (not sure if you played it), it's a much more refined feeling that. Very early in, haven't played much else than the start (accidentally skipped the tutorial because I went somewhere else lol).

God of War III was too forgiving to me (u don't get punished enough for playing bad). While Dark Soul is a bit too unforgiving (and getting back to the boss is annoying).

I was talking about the newest God of War, never played any of the previous ones.

Elden Ring looks like a completely different beast from Dark Souls or Bloodborne. I also didn’t care for those games, but I wanna give Elden Ring a go.

Nope, I was wrong Elden Ring is another SoulsBourne game but with BotW-esque open worldness added to it.

Only played a few minutes but Elden Ring feels like the love child of dark souls and breath of the wild…

Hah. You're really selling it.

It is very exploration driven , you will feel overwhelmed at beginning as what the hell is going on but once you settle down, you start appreciating it. That said , it feels that this is harder than previous dark souls, if you dont enjoy the bizzare difficulty, you wont like it.
Replying to
So I would say yes! The game is open, so it’s really as difficult as you want it to be. Don’t want to fight the boss because it’s hard? Just…go somewhere else, do other stuff (dungeons, exploring) then come back and beat the boss easily!

The game is sort of an anti Ubisoft, or the new halo game. There’s a wind to tell you where you *can* go to progress the main story, but you don’t have to do any of that. You can just do what you want when you want. No map markers telling you exactly what order to do stuff.

At first I hated Dark Souls for similar reasons as you. However I kept coming back to it and eventually things sort of clicked and I began to gain confidence/make progress. Now I love all of their games, Bloodborne being my favorite game ever. I’d say give Elden Ring a shot.

You will not like it. I have a similar opinion as yours, I love difficult games and I loved GoW, I thought it would be different in this game but it wasn't, I regretted the purchase.

Why do you think the souls series is so popular among gamers? Genuine question btw, I also dislike DS too, tried to play the game multiple times, but I find it extremely boring.

I think my short answer would be that it's not. There's a perception out there that Souls games are extremely popular - the data strongly shows otherwise. They're just strongly loved by those in that niche.

Dark souls literally changed the way modern action rpg games are made, god of war included. Talking about obtuse and poor design for a game that brought innovation and tight, unforgiving combat mechanics in the genre is obscure.
