Alkaid : Do you have a plan to get us out of this place alive?
Mezzetino : Sort of. The idea starts with โrun for itโ and generally goes downhill from there.

Thomas Headcanons: Bear
Bear - originally known, of course, as just D7101 - was built by Beyer Peacock of Manchester in March 1964. From new, he was allocated to the sheds at Plymouth Laira, to work semi-fast passenger trains between Plymouth and London. Like the rest of the 35s, he soon proved himself to be more than capable of handling such duties, with the result that he was eventually promoted to full expresses.
As well as this promotion, Bear also found himself being called upon to handle all sorts of freight work, from parcels traffic to express freight, and even less glamorous stuff like ballast trains.
While based at Laira, Bear developed quite an interesting relationship with his fellow engines. Although all the various diesel classes had their good and bad eggs, the 35s were known to be one of the friendlier classes overall, and generally got on well with the steam engines they were intended to replace. Bear was no exception, building up quite strong relationships with many of the engines he shared the shed with - only some of the oldest veterans had trouble accepting him, but then that was to be expected.
Apart from the friendships that developed as a result, the most important thing the steam engines did for Bear was to instill in him all the old values thatโd been passed down from generation to generation. As they made quite clear to him, his modernity meant nothing unless he understood the importance of being a good worker, providing a good service, and working as part of a team. Steam, diesel or electric, made no odds without those qualities.
Unfortunately, this left Bear quite at odds with his fellow diesels, who believed that their modernity made them inherently superior to steam engines. As far as they were concerned, their mere presence would be enough to improve the railways, and despite Bearโs best efforts, they just wouldnโt accept the importance of the old values.
Itโs worth noting that up to 1965, Bear was painted in a similar BR green livery to that heโd eventually receive under NWR service. During that year, he was repainted into BR blue, as shown in Super Rescue.
In May 1966, Bear was reallocated to Cardiff, for what promised to be an unremarkable new career hauling expresses between Swansea and London. And by all accounts, it was largely unremarkable, apart from the usual tiny incidents that the railways tend to attract from time to time. However, it was while staying overnight in London one weekend that Bearโs life took a turn for the interesting. For it was here that he met D199 for the first time. The 46 was also staying overnight, having finished up an inter-regional passenger train, and to put it mildly, his attitude made the Laira diesels look like saints!
D199 normally worked on the London Midland Region, and so had no experience or knowledge of the Western-based 35s. As such, he had no idea of their good rapport with the steam engines, and thus assumed that Bear would serve as a willing audience for him to preach his gospel towards. While Bear did let him speak, he wasnโt really listening, and would only reply with an occasional โYeah,โ or โUh-huh, sureโ or acknowledgements to that effect.
Things only really got interesting when Bear was eventually given a chance to air his views on the subject. Bear began to share his beliefs in retaining the old values heโd been taught...at which point D199 promptly accused him of "being lead astray by those outdated kettles!โ and refused to speak to him for the rest of the night. Bear hadnโt even mentioned steam engines once!
The other reason D199 singled Bear out was because for whatever reason, he was the only other diesel in the shed that night.
Bear and D199 went their separate ways the next morning, and for the next few months, that seemed to be the end of it. In 1967, however, the two were unexpectedly reunited when both were selected to undertake trials on Sodor. This was yet another one of BRโs attempts to persuade Sir Topham Hatt and the NWR that diesels were the path of the future, and while D199 was only too happy to preach his gospel accordingly, Bear initially had his doubts...
It should be noted that although the two diesels did undertake trials on the NWR, they were actually selected separately by their respective regions. The story goes that Sir Topham Hatt had been approached by both the Western and London Midland Regions with the offer of sending him a diesel to trial. It was a close call which offer heโd accept, but in the end, he went with the WR - his familyโs old Western bias shining through yet again. This so incensed the LMR that even when the decision had been made, they simply sent their diesel to Sodor anyway!
Obviously Bearโs upbringing meant he stood a better chance of getting on with the NWR engines, although his chances were not helped by their past experiences, or by D199โฒs blatant arrogance. When the latter started preaching his beliefs mere seconds after arriving at Tidmouth, Bear lost no time whatsoever in making it clear where his true loyalties lay.
Understandably, the steam engines were initially unconvinced, and when Bear did eventually manage to win them over, it was a hard-won victory. Even then, like with Edward and BoCo before them, it was only Bearโs friendship with Henry that helped him to be accepted to begin with. It took a great deal longer for him to gain acceptance on his own merits.
The name Bear actually originated during the early stages of his trials, after the others heard his growling engine for the first time. Of course, they were polite enough to wait until he was out of earshot before they started making comparisons, and it wasnโt until heโd officially entered NWR service that he actually heard about this. And it wasnโt until later still that he decided to adopt it for himself.
Bearโs duties on the NWR are many-and-varied, but his main specialty is the Limited, a semi-fast passenger train which, like the Wild Norโ Wester, runs between Tidmouth and Barrow-In-Furness. However, there are two things which set the former apart from the latter:
Itโs exclusively an NWR service, only running between those two stations - although it does connect at Barrow with other semi-fast services running to London and other destinations.
It calls at more stations - namely all the junction stations, allowing connections to be made with all the branch lines. The full list of stations, and associated branch lines, is as follows:
Tidmouth (for Arlesburgh)
Knapford (for Ffarquhar)
Wellsworth (for Brendam)
Killdane (for Peel Godred)
Kellsthorpe Road (for Kirk Ronan)
Crovanโs Gate (for Norramby, Great Waterton, and the Skarloey Railway)
Vicarstown (also for Norramby)
Barrow-In-Furness (for BR lines)
As often mentioned in canon, Bear is also one of the regular standby engines for the Wild Norโ Wester, for whenever Gordon is out of action or busy elsewhere. Heโs also frequently to be found on heavy express freights, as well as occasional pick-up goods along the Main Line.

D7102 (1/10)
Fuck it let's write something
I blame @mean-scarlet-deceiver. Like, this is 100% their fault.
1970
D7101 is a diesel hydraulic locomotive on the Island of Sodor. He came to the Island several years ago along with another engine, D199. Both engines failed during their trials, and had to be rescued by Henry, who himself had failed as well.
Because his personality had failed just as badly as his mechanicals, D199 was sent back to the other railway in disgrace. D7101, on the other wheel, was a pleasant, personable, and all-around likeable engine, and so The Fat Controller had retained him, using the diesel on The Limited as well as freight services.
7101 has fit in quite well on Sodor - he is especially close to Henry, with whom he struck up a friendship after their "super rescue" during the trial period.
One morning 7101 was sitting in the yard when The Fat Controller approached him.
"7101, may I speak to you for a moment?"
"Of course sir."
"I have a small problem, and I will require your help to determine an outcome." If 7101 didn't know any better, he'd say that The Fat Controller looked embarrassed.
"What is it sir?"
"Well, you see, when I acquired you for this railway, your Region was... less than inclined to give you up."
7101's eyebrows rose. "What does that mean?"
"It means that they never agreed to a transfer, no matter how much I argued. Technically, you are still here on trial."
"But sir, it's been three years! I've been repainted!" 7101 exclaimed. He thought he'd been one of The Fat Controller's engines.
"Yes you have, and as far as I'm concerned, that makes you one of us. Now, I came over here to ask you if you wished to stay, but I think I know what your answer is. Now the question is, how can we make the Western Region come around to our way of thinking...?"
-
Two days later, the Fat Controller was informed that the head of the Western Region was traveling to Tidmouth to personally track down his engine.
Forced to accelerate his scheming, he eventually managed to hatch a master plan.
-
"I feel like a stolen car!" 7101 complained as the men painted over his numbers with quick-dry paint.
"Thatโs because you are." Henry said, sotto voce. The Fat Controller had claimed that he needed a "reliable presence", and had recruited Henry into his plan.
7101 laughed a little at that, knowing that Henry held no malice towards him. He really liked this Island - the engines were friendly, and everyone seemed to care about each other in a way that you didn't get on the mainland. He didn't want to leave.
-
A few minutes later, with his 'new' numbers drying on his side, 7101 watched from the yard as the Fat Controller left his office in Tidmouth Station, following a tall man in a sport coat.
"-now I know that you're full of it, Hatt! I can see it! And why've you repainted it? They're going to the chop soon anyways. And what the hell is that next to it? Is it 1930 all over again?"
7101 gulped. He knew his class was non-standard, but he hadnโt realized that he could be withdrawn so soon. Now he really didnโt want to leave.
"Frederick," Growled the Fat Controller, his voice unexpectedly harsh. "As I have said four times now, this is not your engine, and this is not your region."
"Bullshit. This is my locomotive! It's a Hymek! Do you know where every other Hymek is? MY REGION! Except this one!" Frederick was a very excitable man, and was practically jumping up and down in an effort to prove his point.
"I think that if you investigate a bit more, you will discover that D7102 is most definitely not yours."
"7102? 7102? They only go up to 101!"
"Well, as you can clearly see, this engine is D7102, not D7101, whom we returned to the Western Region three years ago."
"What I can clearly see is that you have a stencil and a pot of paint around here somewhere! What kind of a moron do you take me for Hatt?! This is my engine!"
"Excuse me sirs," Henry said suddenly. "But 7101 was sent back in 1967. This is Bear, we got him from the Midland Region."
Frederick began to turn purple, while the Fat Controller suddenly found the ballast beneath his feet to be of great interest.
"The Midlands!? What?!" Frederick shrieked like a tea kettle.
"Yes." Henry ploughed on with his lie. "He was borrowed from Carlisle and then The Fat Controller decided to keep him."
"Reeeeaaalllllly?!" Frederick was unimpressed. "And what say you, Dee-seven-one-oh-two? Are you magically from Carlisle?"
7101 had no idea why Henry had decided to call him 'Bear', but decided to apply the one fact he knew about Bears to the situation.
He growled unintelligibly, making it seem like he had answered his question like a Bear would.
"What the fuck was that?!" Frederick was turning puce.
"He doesn't speak." Henry and The Fat Controller said at the same time.
Mr. Frederick was so upset that he had to go sit down, and didnโt notice the astounded glances the three Sudrians made at each other.
"I give up!" He shouted after he took his heart medication. "Keep the damn thing! It's not worth it! You're nothing but a fucking thief Hatt! A brazen criminal with a suit! You'll get yours!"
With that, he strode off to the station. Henry, 7101, and The Fat Controller watched him go.
"If he thinks that this was brazen," The Fat Controller said slowly. "I hate to think of what he'd say about my father."
"What did your father do sir?" 7101 asked as Henry rolled his eyes at the memories of the First Fat Controller.
"Well, to start, he stole Thomas from his original owners."
โAnd Edward.โ Henry chimed in.
โAnd Edward.โ
"One of the original express rakes was acquired through insurance fraud."
โWas it? I thought that was just most of the fish vans." โ
โYes.โ
โInteresting.โ
"And the station clock."
"No, that 'fell off a goods wagon'".
"Did it? He must have been feeling brave that day."
7101 listened with raised eyebrows and wide eyes. "Does this mean that I'm one of you now?"
Henry and the Fat Controller, stopped, looked at each other, and burst out laughing.
โYes!โ The Fat Controller eventually said. โIf there was any doubt left, thatโs it done! Iโve stolen you from the Western Region just like my father would have!โ
โNow you really are one of us!โ Henry snickered.
7101 was thrilled!
--
Later
โHenry,โ 7101 asked later. โWhy did you say I was called โBearโ?โ
โI donโt know.โ Henry said after a momentโs reflection. โI thought that it would be more believable if you had a name.โ
โAnd you chose Bear?โ
โThere are thousands of words in the English Language, and at that moment I couldnโt think of any of them other than than Bear or Marmaduke, and-โ
โMARMADUKE?โ
โ-And since it isnโt 1874, I said Bear.โ
โIโm so pleased you said Bear.โ

Good morning Sudrians. I assume all of you had a decent nightโs sleep. Well, in case you didnโt, hereโs a fun yet interesting video produced by Diesel D199. Heโs a YouTuber who has been making Thomas videos for an entire decade. Can you believe that?
As a result, Thomas, Percy, and Lady decide to knock their mighty creator down to size. Thanks to Ladyโs magical gold dust, they actually do. Needless to say, he is not happy about it...not one bit. But thatโs the least of his worries. Donโt forget to subscribe to his YouTube channel for more videos like this.

1. Tell me about Bear- I have absolutely no idea who he is 2. I'm still interested in the natal charts and you've talked a lot about James and a little on Gordon- But not about the others (Mossy, Edward, Percy, Duck etc.) What do you have in mind? :3
1. Oh, youโre in for a treat!
Okay, Bear is not a well-developed character, but his intro story is still interesting. He appears in 1968โs Enterprising Enginesโฆ otherwise known as โthe one where Flying Scotsman visits and Douglas rescues Oliver, Isabel, and Toadโ (so thatโs prob. why Bear gets overlooked, lol).
Honestly, a ton happens in that book (itโs arguably the very peak of RWS wonderfulness) and, amid everything else, Henry has a little mini-arc over the first two stories. In โTenders for Henryโ Henry gets worked up over Flying Scotsmanโs two tenders and Duck plays the same trick as goes down in the Season 3 episode. In the following story, โSuper Rescue,โ Henryโs regulator jams, and heโs heading home for repairs rather melancholy and fretful, expecting to be mocked some more, and regretting that heโs a โfailed engineโ right at this particular moment, when they have a famous visitor, and when Henryโs still very much the yard laughingstock for the tender incident.
En route he encounters not one but *both* visiting diesel engines, who have alike โfailedโ with their trains far worse than he has. Now, D199 has so far done nothing but talk absolute smack about the steam engines. Bear (who is not Bear yet, but itโs a lot less confusing if we donโt drag his number into this) had tried to get his fellow Other Railway diesel to shut up, in very โdonโt you think, perhaps, that itโs a little, uhhhhhh, GODDAMN RUDE to sneer at them in such endless and insulting detail when itโs THEIR RAILWAY?โ fashion, but D199 is not very shut-uppable. At least until this very moment, when heโs failed, and the signalman is threatening to bring out his can opener if the useless โSpamcanโ wonโt hold his tongue!
Long story short, Henry moves Spamcan and his goods train *and* Bear and his passenger train to the next station. (The other engines are delighted that Henry has vindicated steam. Flying Scotsman is also very proud, which I think is cute, as Henryโs honorary introduction into the Gresley family seems to end on a high note of acceptance after all.) Then Henry pulls Bear back to the sheds Worksโฆ tender-first, because he still can only reverse, and itโs then that Bear discovers for the first time that his superloco rescuer was *also* a failed engine and Bear is all โooooOOOOOOoooOOOOooooโฆ?โ and, also, *heart eyes* (that last detail may be my own editorial flourish).
Super!Henry activates "heart-throb hero" mode
But, srs tho. Are those not heart-eyes? I ask you.
By the end of the book, D199 โSpamcanโ (Never. Live. It. Down.) is sent packing but Bear stays. After the N.W.R. purchases him, heโs repainted from blue to his classโs original Brunswick green. Heโs given his name Bear because of the growling noise his engine makes, and loves it, because having a name makes him feel like he really belongs. The end.
Bear doesnโt really see much action after his intro book, though. Honestly, I find it hard to even headcanon up a personality for him, because all the canon details make him seem like not much more than a second BoCo (except that BoCo actually gets significantly more screen time, lolโฆ especially in the annuals). The Fat Controller even praises both of them for being โversatileโ in the same breath. (Because, it seems, they can take both coaches and trucks. Which, um, so? This is the island of Sodor. Y'all even made Gordon a mixed-traffic engine.) Bear works main line, he can take the Express when the usual suspects arenโt available (though his real niche is โthe Limitedโ), James is a dick to him for a while but finally accepts him, and on at least one occasion in a later RWS book Bear and BoCo are both seen at Tidmouth sort of rolling their eyes at each other when *yet another* round of steam/diesel drama is going down.
(Sidenote, basis-wise, Bear, as a Class 35, is actually not quite so strong as BoCo. Admittedly BoCo seems to do main line work pretty often, but this highlights to me again that his initial allocation to a branch line was a bit unusual. Honestly, it may have been meant as temporary until his motor was replaced with something more reliable. Dunno.)

Good afternoon engines and coaches of Planet ๐ Sodor. The biggest holiday of the October season is mere hours away! To celebrate the final countdown, Iโve decided to upload a few spooky videos here to this Tumblr. Because what good would a Sodor Tumblr be without some Halloween ๐ป posts? Not very good Iโd imagine.
The video Iโve uploaded is called the Tedious Tale of Timothy. James tells Thomas and Percy the story about a tank engine being possessed by a demon and how while under said possession, he tried to murder all his passengers. For being titled โtediousโ, itโs actually quite a fascinating video to watch. For all the diehard Thomas fans out there like myself, this would be an excellent video to watch among many during the Halloween ๐ season. This video is best recommended watching in the dark due to lighting issues. Enjoy kiddies!
