Just spent a couple hours with an American volunteer, a US Army veteran of Afghanistan, about to head to Kyiv's front lines.
"I wouldn't be here if I didn't believe this was worth dying for," he told me. "To be a good soldier, you have to be willing to say goodbye."

I wish he could see all the chatter from Europeans who don’t appreciate his sacrifice or the Javelins and think this is (insert past US war again).

I definitely would agree to that statement. When you sign on the line, you sign a blank check payable up to your life.

Will be curious to see how many Iraq/Afghanistan vets go to Ukraine for a sense of redemption. Nothing but respect.

Not all of them go for a sense of redemption.

Praying for those suffering at the hands of evil and for the safety of these true heroes. Thank you to this American soldier.

If only the Russian invaders felt like that. A true patriot would resist Putin despite the risks.

Nolan, can you let me know how I can get a friend over to Ukraine? He’s a healthy 33-year-old male, with no combat experience, but wants to join the fight. He’s had no luck going the Embassy route

They can't spare a lot of time or manpower right now for people who don't already have combat experience. If the embassy didn't accept him but he wants to help, maybe he can check out volunteering to assist refugees in Poland?

Curious about language: How do people who likely speak neither Ukrainian/Russian and can’t read road signs, speak to locals or comrades in arms, function in a battle environment? It doesn’t seem optimal for fighting or staying alive.

Many foreign volunteers are grouped together by nationality when they enter units. Helps with language and common training backgrounds.
