This speech is very dangerous. He called for the purification of the russian society. And he s not used to making figures of speech. He's cosplaying the leader of the USSR but russia is not a superpower anymore. Putin will soon turn his army against the russians themselves

Does anyone have a link to the full speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iEZc36zFYQ

Wouldn't be surprised for another round of civil war in Russia.

He called for the purification of the russian society.

He's actually going full nazi while projecting it on Ukraine.

Once driven out of Ukriane, Russia will switch to cannibalism mode. Russian really need to start rioting at least for their own sake, if ukrainian blood doe's not touch them hard enough.

It sounds very familiar to me. Same as that leaked article that talked about the 'Ukrainian question.'

I just finished watching a documentary about Anna Politkovskaya and the Chechen war and they also referred to that as a special operation and a cleansing so if those are signs then this war is going to get even more violent and repulsive.

I miss the Russian trolls on this sub. I'd like to see how they responded to this. But Putin has ruined the influence of the Internet Research Agency too.

The Olgino guys are working overtime for sure, but they've mostly been diverted to internal resources -- the problem with this war is, they didn't bother to make the proper preparations. Now they have to do a narrative U-turn to explain to ordinary Russians who've been told war is impossible because it's insane that war is necessary, and it's not a war anyway -- all in the midst of an economic collapse.

This is likely manpower-intensive.

They have mostly moved to non-European news sites as far as I can see. And they are pretty successful. Most of Africa and Asia was fully supporting Ukraine when it started. Well, no longer.

Stuff like:

"Why was nobody protesting when the US did it to our non-white people!"

and

" Why would I care, those Ukrainians are a bunch of racists!" (because of the stories that white mothers with children were let over the border before non-white mostly male students from Ukraine).

So yeah, in Europe it looks like people are waking up, but Russia seems to be winning the rest of the world. Sadly.

I mean, we are talking about the country that for years successfully manipulated half of the societies in the world, believing that they would just give up or get bad at it for some reason now was wishful thinking.

Even if a cease fire happens or if they come to an agreement that Ukraine will not join NATO or the EU and won't have an army and will hand over half the country to Russia...

What then. Putin will hang on to power trying to isolate Russia building closer ties with China, India and other nations that are not fully in with the west or democracy as an idea.

Disband NATO... What then? EU will demand an EU army to protect it's self which will then just be NATO 2.0 but worse for Russia as the EU army won't be an army for defence but also one to protect it's economic interests...

I see no good ending to this.

44
level 2

The answer is to not give in to more Putin demands and start pressuring him instead to make demands ourselves.

I sincerely hope that not all of sanctions against Russia will be suspended, even if he stops, and that we will continue working to make ourselves energy-independent from Russia.

53
level 2

come to an agreement that Ukraine will not join NATO or the EU and won't have an army

There is absolutely no shot Ukraine agrees to that.

15
level 2

Would be fun if NATO were like "ok Putin, you win, Ukraine won't join and in fact we're disbanding NATO" to end the war, then immediately after created the Neutrally Aligned Team of Order, a completely new and neutral organization aiming for peace in continental Europe, and also Ukraine and Turkey and the US are invited.

The problem how I see it with a ceasefire and a mutual agreement between Ukraine and Russia is that if such an agreement is reached then Putin will never be prosecuted for his war crimes. Then basically it will be back to status-quo, only with a bombed Ukraine and thousands of people dead. Who will pay the half a trillion USD for rebuilding Ukraine and who will take responsibility for at least dead 26 children?

Who will pay the half a trillion USD for rebuilding Ukraine and who will take responsibility for at least dead 26 children?

The Russian central bank money confiscated by the West.

7

I think you need to consider that even if prosecuted, tried and found guilty, the chances he will ever have to serve time is very slim. For that he would have to be overthrown and handed over to the ICC by his own people.

You make a good point, but I still think it's preferable to even more Ukrainians dying in an ongoing war.

Maybe we could say that we'll pay for it in exchange for political reform in Ukraine and Ukraine joining the EU soon in the future. If Putin doesn't want that, it can be used to pressure him into giving more concessions (like giving up all captured territory aside from Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea) and maybe even bargain some money out of him to help rebuild.

3
level 2

He will never be prosecuted because Russia is a nuclear super-power. No hostile army will enter its borders because the risk will be too high. And without having the option of actually "beating them" on their own territory, they are forever safe to do whatever they want.

I don't know. Hitler did do one thing right. Right at the end.

It's not a ceasefire until every Russian soldier has left Ukraine (including Crimea).

24
level 1

Russia's guarantees aren't worth much. If they were there would be no war in Ukraine since Russia guaranteed Ukraine's sovereignty 30 years ago. The occupation of Crimea nd the breahaway regions also has to end. It's not as if the Russians appear capable of defending them should Ukraine simply invade those areas.

"Even tho it's sad and horrifying it is possible our country will turn towards totalitarian regime for some time. But the real danger is not in police, special forces or an army but in our own mentality. We sometimes imagine, me as well, that if you enforce the order with strong hand, everyone will live better and safer. But in reality, this comfort will be gone very soon when this "strong hand" will start to choke us. And we will feel it on ourselves and our families. Only in democratic system law enforcement officers know the government can change and ask about the result of their work, whether of not they followed the law and what they did to citizens"

- Vladimir Putin, 1996 ( Original in Russian) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-4bgk9ezK8

A lot can change when someone is in power for that long. Hopefully other countries with "strongman" leaders will realize that soon.

With a bit of luck he’s accelerated his own demise, lashing out at your own people is the act of someone desperate. Who knows what’s going on inside his head, doesn’t seem rational to me. Someone needs to take him aside and have a BIG word in his shell like ear! Sooner, rather than later….I think he’s doomed anyway.

I truly think he's trying to scare the Russian population, who is very disorganized and doesn't exactly want to protest in huge numbers, while at the same time taking away attention from what he's STILL doing in Ukraine.

In the meantime, chapeau to the Ukrainian special forces for their intellegent warfare taking out the russian generals. Who knows how many russian troops will survive because of their actions.
