BREAKING—a bill to make Daylight Savings permanent just passed the US Senate by **Unanimous Consent** (S.623: Sunshine Protection Act, as amended to make Daylight Saving Time permanent). It only needs to now pass the House before going to Biden’s desk!

Senate passes bill by unanimous consent to make Daylight Saving Time permanent.
Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) seems excited about it.

To be clear— we are currently in “Daylight saving time” between mid March and November. So it would make our current time permanent. No more clock switching if it passes the House.

4) DST bill update — Rubio says implementation of DST permanency would still be delayed until 2023 to allow for airlines and other companies to have time to build out software and schedule adjustments.

5) Apparently people who live in Seattle (they barely enough sunlight anyway) and live on the horizon facing East edge of time zone might be grumpier than others I expect since it’s darker & sunrise later for them. Others don’t like 9am sunrise in winter.

6) OKAY—looking at comments—everyone hates time changing—but there’s a DST camp that likes sunrise later & sunset later, and there is the Standard Time camp that likes earlier sunrise more (but earlier sunset). My preference is more sunlight after school/work, hence I’m pro-DST.

7) That said, with permanent DST, waking up 7am in the darkness (sometimes 9am sunrise in winter) could be more painful for some people, which I empathize. But a lot of the studies on time shifting is due to SHIFTING causing circadian problems—total sunlight is still constant.

8) I know I know getting kids up in the morning for school in winter under permanent DST will be more painful. But the flip side for DST is that kids could have more outdoor afterschool activities & exercise too!!! Kids can run around after school until 5pm instead of 4pm sunset!

9) I really do empathize with morning risers. But I would say some people are diurnal while some are very nocturnal. I’ve seen studies that show sunlight makes some people calm while others anxious. Meanwhile, darkness depresses some folks, while it calms and uplifts others.

Odd for someone representing a state that doesn't participate in annual DST for the most part.

Breathtaking! Start with the easy stuff. Like get rid of the penny. Then the hard stuff - make private funding of public elections a crime.

The way im reading it, is we would still turn back clocks in November, then push them forward in March 2023. But then they never change again after that.

You mean...Joe Manchin didn't express "serious concern" and that this needs some intense "review" before making any decision.

They need to stop teasing us with this stuff and ACTUALLY pass it. Changing clocks is pretty much the one thing we can all universally agree is a pain and pretty pointless in this day and age.

I don’t get how people are ok with the sun not rising until 8:15 in December, or how changing a couple clocks 2 times a year is so unfathomably difficult.

Yeah and the current 4:00pm sunset where I live is just great...

I hope it doesn't pass. Children shouldn't have to wait for the school bus in the dark. It would make more sense to keep Standard Time all year.

Or learn that actual noon is "sometime around 1 PM"...

Because we want kids walking to school in the dark all winter?
