It is almost a certainty that it was the Ukrainian side that killed the former NYT journalist. Just another botched story. Virtually every press outlet ran with Ukraine’s claim that the Russians did it. Never bothered to verify the claim, just repeated it and published as fact.
The Ukrainians are again attempting to leverage this incident to drag the West into the war. Their entire social media apparatus, including the western funded NGOs, are using a man who their side killed to advance a narrative.
The NYT, to its credit in memorializing the slain journalist, did not take the bait to attribute the attack to the Russians

This is the easiest to understand map of the area where incident took place. These were RU positions as of yest. Shooting did not occurred by sniper, they took heavy fire, according to his colleague. Again, almost a certainty it was Ukraine side, which used dead body as a prop.
New York Times has now confirmed that it was a *Ukrainian checkpoint*. Understand this in the context of the testimony of his colleague, who said they were being shot at, turned around, and continued to be shot at from the direction of the checkpoint.
“We crossed the checkpoint and they started shooting at us. We turned around and they kept shooting at us.”
