GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - The Greenwood School Board has voted to close W.C. Williams Elementary School at the end of the current school year to save money.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (https://bit.ly/1FsOXns ) the school board voted 4-1 Thursday to shutter the 85-year-old school. It has about 400 students.

Superintendent Montrell Greene says the closing made sense given the declining enrollment in the district, the age and condition of the school and the district’s tight finances.

He has estimated that closing Williams will save as much as $500,000 a year.

Williams opened in 1930 and was added onto several times over the years, mostly in the 1950s and 1960s. Greene says it needs $1.7 million in repairs.
