Yeah I have an English student in China who recently told me (in general terms) that despite his age, Putin was very attractive, etc. It was awkward. This is a very educated woman in her 20s who knows her shit... :/

Long story short, Putin is alpha. I almost wanted to tell her, "Do you know how badass the leader of Ukraine is?"Instead we changed the subject~

Problem is they can’t think. So you have this dichotomy of mindsets: one where they truly aspire freedom like America but the other part of the brain worshipping authoritarianism due to years of brainwashing. Sometimes the good part slips out but sometimes it retreats to their more oppressed self. It’s very interesting actually. It’s almost like some mass hallucination so to speak, they don’t really have a clear identity of who they are. Almost schizophrenic.

With the Nanjing massacre shoved down their throats every year, how can they even deal with the hypocrisy?

I guess any invasion of China is justified according to Chinese people. Got it.

Time to start praising Japanese war criminals. They were just on a "special military operation" to "denazify" China, am I right?

69
level 2

Well the Japanese goal for all of Asia was to build a sphere of influence led by Japan to push the west out. If twitter existed at the time many people would find the invasion justifiable. you can always find a excuse for an invasion. I’ve read this from a few books, many Japanese at the time also saw themselves as true inheritors of Classical Chinese culture and saw the dynasty ruling at the time as weak and not the Chinese culture that they used to admire.

36
level 2

Currently, most Chinese citizens are like zombies - they were told to hate someone, and trained to be brainless

25
level 2

They were bringing peace to China. After all, Japan saw that the Chinese were busy fighting each other over who got to run the country and thought it was all very silly, so they came in to put a stop to that.

18

I like it. Little Pooty can have 5 million Chinese corpse brides to accompany him when he passes.

Nice to see that while Pooty continues to slaughter civilians, they still see him as the victim of bullying. I guess by their logic, China shouldn't have bullied Japan 🗾 during the last century.

If you browse Weibo everyday you won't be surprised by such speech at all. Sometimes I even consider GFW to be doing more good than bad, since without it such comments will go pollute the whole world; putting up a barrier around the shithole and let them entertain themselves might also be a great solution.

6
level 2

Yeah I've heard it said that the GFW was set up not to stop China from seeing the world, but from the rest of the world seeing the real China.

Imagine taking a Twitter comment with two likes to say what Americans are.

Bruh, y'all do notice that these comments have like 2 or 3 likes right? Even the main comment only has 100ish likes. There's some comments on Twitter saying more idiotic shit that has even more likes. Compare that to the pro-Ukraine comments on Weibo that have literally hundreds of thousands of likes.

These are clearly fringe opinions but y'all are using these extremist opinions to bash on your everyday Chinese person who doesn't have these opinions.

The Chinese mindset is a conflicted, schizophrenic one. Problem is that the “average” Chinese person cannot think. By that, I truly mean they can’t fucking think. They don’t have the mental capacity for critical thinking and being able to objectively argue. That’s what happens you have authoritarian doctrines drilled down into your brain for years upon years, generations upon generations.

That’s why certain Chinese behaviors and thoughts are so strikingly repulsive or even at times in contradiction with one another. I don’t know how to theorize it just yet, but it’s almost like everyone has the dual personalities of who they actually are, and who they were brainwashed to be.

Though these are probably fake.

Ah I got downvoted, whatever. But use your common sense. The comments are all similar and have one or two likes underneath a like that has 400. It's also on wechat. These kind of comments are always being shown and have been for Chinese diplomats and other political types before. And yeah, sex and war do go together.

Hello!

I want to start by saying that I'm utterly disgusted to the point of physical pain by seeing what's happening in the Chinese media about the war in Ukraine. As of right now, I live in a country in Europe but I still have plenty of friends from China for years.

Recently, I changed the profile picture on the app to a blue sky with a sunflower field that represents the colors of Ukraine's flag. One of my friends, a 22 years old girl, said that she likes my new profile picture and if I took the photo. I explained to her what's all about and then she started losing her mind... Here is some of the shit she's been barking :

"我只觉得你被洗脑地深" - told me I'm brainwashed "我只是觉得,战争固然是不好的,但是你一边倒地支持乌克兰,我也觉得很不理智" - she said that war is not good but is not rational to support Ukraine... (So I should be on Russia's side? F**k off!)

Before going further I want to add something. I'm studying clinical psychology (post-graduate) and I usually talk to her almost every day sometimes I let her vent and listen to her. My English is not perfect but good enough to help her. I've been helping her for free with books and other things. We were very close for a very long time. I was traveling through Europe a lot before 2020 and share stuff with her. She doesn't know history outside of China, and her geography is... But she still decided to be an expert and lecture me about this. She started to be more and more nationalistic in the past year to this point. I tried to ignore as much as I could in the past, trying to understand that all she's reading is crap and her opinion is based on that. But now I decided to stop swallowing their manure anymore. So yeah, more and more Chinese are eating the propaganda and it's scary to think about the future. This is what followed

"你知道伊拉克战争死了多少人么" she jumped from Ukraine to Iraq, asking me if I know how many people died "还有阿富汗战争" Afghanistan now. "还有海湾战争科索沃" Kosovo. "这些你都曾如此难受和愤懑?" asking me if I felt bad because of those wars. "我觉得吧,你只是在相信你想相信的" - telling me I believe only what I want.

We went back and forth then she said this " 你是在教我反共产主义么" I'm teaching her anti-communism.

The continuation,

"看看你们疫情是怎么防控的" barking crap about the pandemic and how we, outsiders, dealt with it. "全世界除了我们中国,没一个国家很好地控制了疫情" - only China prevented the pandemic. "我们的疫苗是最好的疫苗" - China has the best vaccine.

Then we started to argue more and I told her that she doesn't have freedom of speech (is the first time for me arguing with some of them. I was way too pissed off)

" 你们西方言论自由是吧" - freedom of speech in the west? " 特朗普推特为啥被封呢" - why was Trump's Twitter account blocked? Lol "反观你们西方,一个个言论自由,结果不听政府的话,连个疫情都控制不住" - she said that, even though we have freedom of speech(in the west), we don't listen to authorities and can't control the epidemic.

After we went back and forth, I started to tell her that she'll remember in the future that she's supporting a war criminal like Putin. She started to calm down and said this,

这样,我们不要再讨论这些,我们是好朋友,你永远都是我的好朋友,谈这些只会伤感情 - let's stop talking about this because we are good friends and we are only hurting each other's feelings. "不要因为这些分歧而伤害了两个人的友情," she said to not ruin our friendship because of our differences. "我不想因为这些伤害我们的友情" kind of the same thing as up there, she doesn't want to ruin the relationship.

So, I decided to end it with her. Just so you guys know, I always avoid politics with them but this one went too far for me. Unfortunately, she has my email and she started to send my emails saying to talk again. I will ignore her. Call me a horrible person for ignoring her but I had enough. I felt like I was back in middle school arguing like a dumbass for nothing. I wasted 3 hours going back and forth with her.

To be fair, I don't feel very good after this because I always restraint myself. But I couldn't swallow it. I always loved my friends back in China, most of them are nice people. But no way in hell someone should talk about politics with them.

So yeah, that's how the state-controlled media is destroying relationships. In reality, she has no idea about Russia, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Iraq... She is just barking what she's reading to others. I don't even want to imagine what's going on in the mainland right now and how frustrating it can be to hear this face to face.

If you guys want, you can share your personal experience also. I'm in complete disgust at how the state media is portraying the invasion of Ukraine. It's unbelievable how they change history and reality. Kids will learn about this crap. The unbelievable world we are living in...

Edit 3.1 14:41 I‘m back. I want to know how to get my reddit edits back, it looks like the second half of my post is missing.I dont know why.

This is a Chinese who has never been abroad and has no political experience. My English is not very good, so the following expressions are all translated by google.

As an ordinary Chinese, I can feel that the people around me are not so concerned about the Ukrainian war. While it's being reported on mainstream social media, it's not often discussed in depth when chatting with friends. But based on China's population base, it would seem huge for a small half of the people to care about this matter.

Whether this incident is "invasion" is affirmative on a personal level. Russia's military operations are indeed violating international law, which we ordinary people can also agree with. We sympathize with innocent Ukrainian civilians. The vast majority of Chinese people are expressing concern for Ukrainian civilians on social networks, hoping that they will be spared from the war.

Hi everyone! As a Chinese who is living in Europe now, I can't help but notice the great difference between Chinese and the west about the attitude towards this war. I found that Chinese people had formed a theory of why they should support Russia in this war (of course helped by the propaganda of state media) and I can affirm you that this is the most popular opinion among many Chinese Internet communities. (Note that this is absolutely not the majority opinion of Chinese people overall because there is still a significant silent majority apart from popular Internet communities). Although I do not agree with it, I do think it makes some sense in some ways and it is the perfect reflection of the Chinese mindset as a product of brainwashing. So I think it could be interesting to share it here and see how western people think of it.

  • Double standard and hypocrisy of western media and governments

When discussing about recent events, many Chinese people will keep telling you a fact that the US has started more wars than any other countries in the world since the end of cold war. Of course some would call it "whataboutism", but what Chinese people see is double standard and hypocrisy of the west. The US has been a bully towards many small countries and caused civilian casualties yet its operations in middle west is never as condemned as Russia and even supported by NATO countries. Not a single country put sanctions on the US because it killed thousands of innocent people in the middle east. Of course there are NGOs and oppositions that are against US wars, but the majority of western governments have turn a blind eye about it.

Besides, many would point out that even though the US condemns China's dictatorship, but it itself is allied with one of the most authoritarian regime in the world, Saudi Arabia. It is also allied with Israel which has a bad reputation about killing civilians in wars. The west has also turned a blind eye about India persecution of Muslims while keep condemning China on its treatment of Muslims. Recently a lot of international organizations banned Russian sports teams, celebrities, etc., but never did the same with other above-mentioned countries. All of this is making Chinese people believe that the west's accusations against China are just because they see China as a threat to their global dominance but not for those lofty reasons (human rights etc.)

  • The US is the biggest beneficiary of this war

Many Chinese people doubt: "What is the point of NATO after the fall of Soviet Union?" In fact, they point out that Russia itself wanted to join NATO in early 2000s. Putin himself said that he once sought to build a better relationship with the west, but turned down by western leaders. In response, NATO absorbed many countries neighboring Russia, which is considered as a major threat to its national security. Of course some would argue that it is each country's own rights to join an organization or not, but there is a counter example: why would the US make such a big deal with the Russians deploying missiles in Cuba? Isn't it each country's own rights to make options about defending itself?

The conclusion is that the US is portraying Russia as an imaginary enemy for European countries to maintain its military presence and influence in Europe. With this war broke out, Chinese people believe it will lead to the flowing back of European capitals to the US due to the fear of war, which would help resolve the US's financial crisis. A few of them even believe the US is also behind Brexit because apparently it is a significant blow to the European union ideal and leads to a closer tie between the UK and the US. A disunited Europe is beneficial to the US because they would rely more on American troops to help them defend themselves. On the other hand, Europeans leaders such as Merkel and Macron are often portrayed as insightful leaders seeking to build a united Europe which is able to defend itself and reduce its reliance on America. Chinese people also like to refer countries with American military bases as "colonies" of America, especially Japan and Korea, because they believe that with American troops at your door apparently it's hard to say no to their requests.

  • The enemy of my enemy is my friend

Of course many Chinese people do not like Russia either before this war since it also did not treat China well in history. But Chinese people find Russia is the only friend and major world power who is willing to work with China against the evil US. As a result, they hope that this war could be a distraction to the west so that China can make this opportunity to take a breath from the west's harsh attitudes (If I may use the WOW reference, many of Chinese people see Russia as the tank in the team while China is the healer). They also believe the cooperation between China and Russia is only temporal because Russia is also just another evil capitalist regime and only the communist China can be the final winner.

A friend told me that his daughter’s class is going to hold a debate on Russia Ukraine issue. And in its 50 kids primary school class, 48 support Russia while 2 stand for Ukraine. 3 days before the debate, their teacher introduced the context of the issue by play a video made by Sima Nan, who is quiet famous and influential in Chinese social media (more detail in wikipedia). And he sent me some part of chat history of parent Wechat group. For privacy, names have been masked.

That when given a choice between living in free democratic societies or under authoritarian regimes, people will always choose freedom, it’s that simple. And I can’t help but laugh at all the anti nato nationals in the mainland, how fast they forgot had the Allies in the pacific had not engaged, they’d be speaking Japanese right now.
Xi and the ccp got played by putin with this invasion that he sold them on…how they sit back and pretend war crimes are not being committed is beyond disgusting. What about their citizens in country ? Ccp gonna leave them for cannon fodder ? Rant over.
