Has it's moments
I've made it a point to recently go through some of the games that have been constantly declared the worst in history, and Daikatana was among the first. I've found a lot of things that made me see why it would be called that. The extremely annoying first levels. The suicidal AI companions that you can't even leave alone without them finding a way to get themselves murdered. Some weapons that are rather counterproductive. Physics that tend to favor people who manage to somehow never make contact with the floor, actually succeed in getting myself killed by trying to get unstuck out of secret passage. And yet, there are these moments, like when you're alone, with a bunch of disks, ricocheting them off the walls to clear a room of enemies that's just amazingly fun. Though sadly, such moments are broken up by larger portions of babysitting Superfly and what's her face. Oh, but make no mistake, it's a lot better as a game than a lot of the FPS games in recent years. The fact that a flawed game like Daikatana makes the Medal of Honor reboot (the one that got a sequel, which I'm told is even worse) look even worse, is baffling. Give it a go.
Distinctly Average
For all the negative things you've heard about this game, it's not THAT bad. It's just really, really boring. Unfortunately that's one of the worst things a game can be. Oh dear. I've played this through beginning to end and aside from the opening levels, which are just awful, it's an amazingly dull game, featuring pathetic enemies, underwhelming weapons, lackluster level design and AI partners that, while not hair-pullingly awful, are far from the sharpest tools in the drawer. Combined with the dull models from the Quake 2 engine and the disappointing audio, it's just a massive, massive slog to get through. If you're curious, wait for a sale. It's not the worst game in the world - not by a long shot - but it's hardly worth full price.
Legendarily messed up
Hoo boy... Yes this game deserves all the stick it gets. The design is muddy and the difficulty is wonky as fuck. I remember standing around a locked door for 30 minutes because it was not at all clear how to open it... BUT! It had many, many memorable ideas and for that alone it is worth a look. It is a study in failed design, hopeless ambition and unfullfilled promises. Especially the multiplayer, with all the funny weaponry.
If you like to have fun with this game..
...get the unofficial patch 1.3 - which will not only fix bugs and level design issues, but will also let you (optionally) save whenever you want plus you can choose to make the sidekicks invincible or even remove them from the entire game to play it through all alone.
Unfair Reputation
This game has truly an unfair reputation. The game is hard, is hard because it was not done as it should have, but still is not horrible as many says. In my humble opinion Blood 2 - The Chosen is worse than Daikatana, and I quite love both of them, but nobody talks bad about the first. This game had outdated graphics when it came out, but for us, now, kinda every game looks old and we're on this website because screw graphics. It's kinda like playing Dark Souls, one error and you're done for, no save wherever you want... The game truly starts to be unbearable (and thus the three stars) when companions comes in. Their AI is so bad you just wish they could disappear, but besides them it's not bad at all. It needed polishing, but it's not the worst game I've ever seen. Give it a try, especially if it's in sale.

Description
In 2455 A.D. , Kage Hishima used the magical powers of the Daikatana, the most powerful sword ever forged, to alter time and establish himself as supreme ruler. You are Hiro Miyamoto, one of the few people on Earth who remembers what really happened. The burden of saving the world, your version of it, has fallen unto your shoulders. You’re not alone as your friends, Superfly Johnson and Mikiko Ebihara, travel by your side. You must gather weapons, overcome all obstacles, discover deviously concealed secrets, and battle a bewildering array of foes. Use your resources wisely as you’ll need all the help you can get. Are You Ready?!

From the rock star designer, John Romero, comes the legendary, in more ways than one, Daikatana (“long sword” in Japanese). Run ‘n’ gun is the norm here as you blast your enemies to oblivion with over 24 glorious, bad ass weapons. On top of the sweet, sweet guns, you are armed with the Daikatana--a weapon that grows in power the more you use it. Go on a wild time-tripping ride and make your enemies “Suck It Down!”

  • Wreak temporal havoc in 4 distinct time periods: ancient Greece, medieval Norway, near-future San Francisco, and high-tech Japan in 2455.
  • Incredible sidekicks as they provide cover fire, watch your back, and provide helpful feedback to assist you in your mission.
  • Pulse-pounding multiplayer action with two equally exciting modes of play: classic Deathmatch and Jewel Quest, a variant of capture the flag.

Throwback Thursday Recommendation

Every Thursday, we share the earnest reasons that make a classic game so dear to us!

Recommended by Kilg0re, Stream Team: Daikatana is an underrated game in my opinion, that has an undeserved reputation for being a "bad" game. Though it certainly has it's janky issues, and there were many issues on release, there is a lot of fun to be had here. IMO, once you get past the drab, grindy opening episode (which is the one most people played in the shareware demo), the game really opens up in terms of graphics and level design. The John Romero approved community patch makes it much more playable on modern PCs, and I think even if it's not a bona fide masterpiece, when all is said and done, it's an ambitious fun experience.
