Cash App Taxes supports the most-common tax forms and schedules for Federal and state returns for tax year 2021. You can check out the complete list of forms and situations we support here.

Some definitions:

Form or situation

What it’s for

Situation

Life or financial scenarios and how they could impact your tax filing

Part-year state returns

You, or your spouse if married filing jointly, lived in a state for only part of the tax year.

Multiple state returns

You, or your spouse if married filing jointly, earned income in more than one state during the tax year.

Nonresident state returns

You, or your spouse if married filing jointly, earned income in a state you weren't a resident of. This could include wages, rental income, or S-corp or partnership income.

Married filing separately in community property states (state returns)

If you live in a community property state (Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, New Mexico, Texas* or Wisconsin) and you're filing as married filing separately, we won't be able to help prepare your state tax return. You can still file your federal taxes for free.

*Texas doesn't require state income taxes. See the 7 states that don't require a state income tax here.

Filing state taxes without filing federal taxes

With Cash App Taxes, you can file your federal taxes with or without filing state taxes, but it doesn't work the other way around — no state filing without federal. You can file your Federal taxes with us first, then later come back to file your state taxes. You can't file your state taxes first, and come back later to file your Federal taxes.

Underpayment penalty calculations and payments

If you underpaid your federal or state tax during the year, you may owe underpayment penalties. The IRS and/or your state will figure this amount for you and send you a notice detailing the additional amount you owe (if applicable).

Part-Year New York City Tax Returns or Part-Year Yonkers City Tax Returns

You, or your spouse if married filing jointly, resided in New York City or Yonkers during part of the tax year.

1040-PR

You, or your spouse if married filing jointly, are self-employed and residing in Puerto Rico.

Increased standard deduction reporting

You take the standard deduction and want to claim an increased standard deduction with your qualified disaster loss added on.

There are some situations we don't support. These are:

  • Filing your state taxes without filing your Federal taxes using Cash App Taxes first. You can file your Federal taxes without filing state taxes, or you can file your Federal taxes with us first and come back later to file your state taxes. We don’t support filing only your state taxes.
  • Multiple state filings, part-year state filing, or non-resident state filing are not supported by Cash App Taxes.
  • Return filings for minors (those under 18)
  • Return filings for those residing outside of the United States
  • Prior year return filings
  • Foreign earned income
  • Underpayment penalty calculations/payments
  • Married filing separately returns in community property states. See the list of community property states in the introduction of IRS Publication 550, Community Property.

What if I can't file my state return with Cash App Taxes?

Even if you aren’t able to file your state tax return with us, you may be able to file your Federal return using Cash App Taxes. Always check your state’s requirements to make sure it will accept an e-filed state return without a Federal return being e-filed through the same place before you go this route.
