I’m racking my brain for a historical parallel to the courage and fighting spirit of the Ukrainians and coming up empty. How many peoples have ever stood their ground against an aggressor like this? It’s legendary

As one of my favorites here has shown, I am getting the same awe watching Ukraine now as I do when I learn about the amazing power & strength of the indigenous peoples.

I strongly support the people of Ukraine and despise Putinism, but the struggle for self-determination and freedom is neither uniquely modern nor European.

Paul, the Finns did so in 1939-40 against Stalin. They held their own. There are many similarities between the Finnish Winter War and the current Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.

1992 siege of Sarajevo and Serbian agression on Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnians were in a much worse position than Ukranians because US imposed weapons embargo on ex Yugoslav states. We made IEDs to destroy tanks rolling into Sarajevo, no Stingers or RPGs.

Perhaps the Finns during the winter war in 1939. Nobody came to our help against the Soviet army. There was almost 10 Russian soldiers against 1 Finnish soldier. And they had superior air forces, tanks, ships, submarines etc. Still we survived as a nation.
But
is great!

...but let's also keep in mind that during WW 2, Finland supported Nazi Germany. (but in fairness, protected its Jewish and other minority populations from broad persecution.)
