Wowee, I did not expect this go to so viral! It's just one part of a larger piece for a client at my job, and you can see the rest of it here!

Any reason for AK's dark blue spike?

Pretty interesting how the orange disappears in the mid-section of the country . Not unexpected really, but I like the color choices and how it tells this story. Nicely done!

The disappearing orange is the industrial decline of the U.S. and the decline of good jobs and opportunity.

Amazing viz!
Which software have you used? These kind of plots are much cooler than regular maps with multiple colors

Thanks! This is done in R

Three things jump out:
1. Few people in the west are from their state
2. Few people in the south are foreign born
3. NY has the most stable pattern over 170 years

It’s not “few people” in the west - just a lower proportion, as the west’s population has steadily grown with transplants in the last couple decades.

I love this. I especially like the usage of AK as the legend explainer too. That's a nice way to do it!

This is awesome. I’d love to see the overall population change in each state over time as well, to know if the change in share is being driven by an overall change in population.

Wonder if you could change the size/shape of state to reflect population change

Great question! The border crossed us: Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo imports 1849 Mexican settler pattern. So 'born in other US states' is an empty set b/c it was Mexico. AZ started out at a lower baseline of non-indigenous humans at entry to the US, due to the Sonoran desert.

Wow. The ease of understanding of this graphic is phenomenal. It simplifies what would be a very difficult dataset for most people to understand. Well done!

Strongly agree! The arrangement of the states, the simple tripartite color scheme, the *excellent* key at the top. In terms of the ease-of-understanding to underlying-data ratio, this graphic is a true rarity.

Really cool visualisation! Easy to compare states, and the colors make it fun to scan while also providing contrast. And at a glance you know exactly what you are looking at. You don’t need numbers, because you know the audience is looking for trends.
