The Biden strategy is working. Putin seems perplexed: his false flag pretexts for invasion? Exposed! NATO? Increasingly unified! Ukraine? Determined and resilient! Not too late for Putin to withdraw, and be happy to survive the crisis he created.

Disagree. Putin has resources to sustain a long-term pressure campaign that will continue to destabilize Ukraine. NATO loses long game because too many moving pieces. I've moved to position that harsh sanctions should be invoked now; esp wrt to Moscow on Thames

I agree. The ultimatum should be “withdraw your forces from Ukraine border or face crippling sanctions against the Russian government and oligarchs.”
We’re saying, Invade Ukraine and and the sanctions will come.”

I believe Putin’s minimum desired outcome it to establish one or both of Crimea and Eastern Ukraine as acknowledged provinces of Russia
Redrawn borders to the current defacto
Not sure he will back off with less than one of those

My belief is that this begins and ends with the oligarchs that prop up Putin's power. Putin's not getting any younger, but he had the perceived power of a weak Trump. He needed to show that he's still on top, by pushing Joe Biden around, but that hasn't worked

So when Russia invades tonight, Ukrainians get slaughtered and NATO stands back and do nothing what is the response going to be? Well we tried. When US fails to lead, the world crumbles. So well done everyone. Glad you are united: in your inaction.

Is your plan for NATO, led by the US, to launch a preemptive attack to start WWIII? Let it be Putin’s war. NATO is far more united than it has been 5 yrs & will make him & Russia pay dearly. Just hope the nukes don’t start flying- then it will make no difference who started it.

Can you imagine if Mexico had Russian installed leader and wanted to join the Russian Union and moved lots of troops and armaments to the New Mexico\California\Texas\Arizona border!

That’s not the story. Study the history of the area. That sounds like a Fox News talking point.

Full scale invasion happens only if there is under the table "unity" with the West, otherwise what will happen is clear - they will continue their military operations in the already occupied lands in Eastern and Southern Ukraine.
As for sanctions, EU remains unreliable

I welcome good news sir, but nothing comes without a cost when dealing with Putin and he strikes me as a ruthless pragmatic fearful of looking weak in any context …

Putin should begin withdrawal of his military machine tomorrow. His broad mandate has been a military exercise ending Monday. If he initiates stand down, he will fulfill his mandate, show the West, in particular the US, to be alarmist and wrong. Will be a victory for all.

If his withdrawal is the only goal, that would be temporary. He will regroup, update his strategy and come back. What will keep him at bay for a ling time or give up?
What do you think that deployment is costing per day?
$6-$10 million?
Not including fuel, food and medicine.
Don’t forget the human toll on extended field deployments and the cold.
This is costing Russia tons.

It will take more than threats of sanctions to prevent Ukraine being smashed in the short term. Successful negotiations require compromise.
