How do you debunk the idea that progressive policies must be adopted to win?

14
User avatar
level 2

Progressives make up a very small amount of the voter base. Plus they support policies like M4A and student loan forgiveness which would be disastrous

9
User avatar
level 2

What are progressive policies exactly?

Is comprehensive heathcare a progressive policy?

Is paid maternity leave a progressive policy?

Can something be called progressive if it's already the world wide standard?

Count how many seats progressives have flipped

I forgot that a progressive ran in Virginia.

I forgot that a progressive running in Virginia told parents "I Don't Think Parents Should Be Telling Schools What They Should Teach."

I know we live at a time when socialists pass as progressives, progressives pass as moderate Democrats, and actual moderate Democrats are evil corporate sellouts and GOP enablers, but there's not much moderate about McAuliffe. Most of his campaign was an exercise in arrogant, inflammatory hyperpartisanship.

26
level 2

Oh, right. Mr. "Parents should have no say over their children's schooling" was actually in the establishment wing of the Democrat party.

I'm sure this reassures moderate voters.

It was progressive policies at the local level (Loudoun and Fairfax county school boards) + the utterly boring Hillary Clinton stand-in that was Terry McAuliffe who told parents they had no right to a say over what their schools taught their kids. Progressive policies motivated republicans to turn out and the standard bad, boring messaging from the moderate democrats didn't motivate the democratic base to show up

I'm not all that progressive but even I see this meme as being poopy.

In hindsight, it's funny that Gavin Newsom easily won his recall election with a campaign strategy that mostly just compared his Republican opponents to Trump. The gubernatorial candidate in Virginia used that as part of his campaign, and this was also part of the campaign from the people who were against the S.F. Board of Education recall.

15
level 2

The recall was more about local politics and the stupid individuals on the board than about any national issue.

Gavin's main Republican candidate was batshit insane

20
level 2

California is a much bluer state than Virginia and Elder have him every reason to compare him to Trump.plus a lot of people just thought the recall was a sham anyway.

Sf resident here, school board officials are dumbfucks and one of them called asians house ni****s in a city 30% asian. Wasnt political as much as it was getting dumbfucks out

I think it would be helpful to establish there are progressives, and then there are "progressives". Both have problems, but one is clearly a lot worse.

15
level 2

Yeah there's a difference between social progressives and economic progressives, and I don't understand why people have such a hard time separating those 2. CRT is unpopular, but economic leftism is growing more popular by the day. Even the GOP has kind of abandoned attacking economic progressive ideas as much since they know its popular and started going all in on culture war crusade, which is obviously working. The real strategy would be to become more socially conservative and economically progressive but that would be very unpopular within key groups in the party so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How does a moderate losing an election mean that progressives are wrong?

3

Internet pundits are wildly out of touch with how little of a fuck the median voter gives about public policy. The median voter votes off of fucking gas prices and vague notions about inflation. That's basically it. The Dems and the Biden admin have not done a good messaging job on making the public know that inflation is their #1 priority, which shows to the public that their priorities (if they even still have any) are in-touch and aligned with the public's. If I was Biden, I would champion the current immigration negotiations proposed by that one Republican Florida Congresswoman and also ease worker visa restrictions along with slashing tariffs (even temporarily) to show that I am committed to fighting inflation. Sadly Biden has no messaging, other than trying to desperately convince the public the economy is good when almost everyone (fairly or not) says it is not good. And I have yet to see strong results yielded from that messaging.

Terry really should have not taken the bait. He should have just campaigned on the good record Dems had built in Virginia (Terry, YOU WERE A KEY REASON FOR THIS AS GOVERNOR) over the past 8 years. Youngkin ran a good campaign and managed to get people to think he was somehow a moderate, but Terry should have still won.

5
level 2

No, he absolutely should have pushed back. What he should have done was correct the record, not say something stupid like “parents should fuck off”. This sub loves to claim that saying “CRT isn’t taught in schools” is bad messaging but per the DCCC polling monitoring how best to shore up Democrats, that is exactly what Democrats should be doing

I mean there are some areas where being more economically progressive might help their electoral prospects. For the most part, it's the woke shit that turns people off.

Exactly social and economic issues are different when it comes to progressivism. Although I struggle to see why any of that woke shit is social progressivism but I digress

Yeah, I'm sure banning congressional stock trades, legalizing weed, and forgiving student loans would definitely turn voters away from the Democratic party lol

21
level 2

Most voters don’t give a shit about student loans and probably don’t want the us to spending billions in stimulus for the rich when we’re already dealing with inflation

44
level 2

forgiving student loans would definitely turn voters away from the Democratic party lol

Who doesn't like wealth transfers towards the well-to-do? Next up, eliminating the SALT cap.

35
level 2

Forgiving student loans might.

68
level 2

San fransisco style anti meritocracy might too

14
level 2

broke: last one

woke: first two

7
level 2

I think most of that would depend on the district. In a moderate district, running on 'forgiving student loans' would likely lead to a loss. Legalizing weed can as well but that's a tougher one to gauge.

2
level 2

Frankly, all those are minor for voters who believe Democrats ruined the economy.

It depends on what they mean by progressive - if progressive means actually fulfilling campaign promises like lowering prescription drug prices vs much defund the police

Activists' interests lie primarily in buttressing the reasons for their continued patronage and not in the wider electoral prospects of their party.

I, too, remember when civil rights activists and feminists pushed the notion of never ending revolution over concrete accomplishments like the Voting Rights Act or the Disabilities Act or the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act or the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr Hate Crime Act

I'm fine with that

If it means drastically increasing legal immigration numbers and some type of amnesty for those already here for many years

They really don't.

The only thing they have to do is clean up their ranks and avoid being framed as party of the progressive movement. All these concessions on trade and immigration that Democrats have chosen to swallow instead were wrong, unnecessary and politically ineffective. They were also concessions to the wrong voter demographics.

6

I feel like Virginia was a horribly run campaign. The entire campaign was Youngkin=Trump. Youngkin successfully convinced people he wasn't like Trump, while also simultaneously courting Trump supporters by attacking CRT and other hot button Trumpy issues.

Virginia was an example of the challenge Democrats face with Trump out of power and what buttons non Trump Republicans can push to activate Trump's base while also not being Trump himself. It was a dry run.

If Democrats don't figure out how to counter this, then there will be a problem. Probably the best way to counter this is to not run candidates that are significantly to the left of the general public on social issues. If there is even one Democrat doing something silly in that regard it gets blown up by the right wing media/even the mainstream media.

Also inflation needs to calm down and Covid needs to go away.

Done by the same idiots that think the war-hawk party has moved too far left. Lmao
