Famous Republican Abraham Lincoln. See, this was a GOP coup all along!
Typically the woke gripe about Lincoln relates to him approving the hanging of Sioux leaders after the Dakota War of 1862. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dakota_War_of_1862?wprov=sfla1
Sort of the polar opposite of whitewashing history. Every famous white gut is really a villain. Get yourself in that headspace and it all becomes clear.
Because he was still a white supremacist despite being an abolitionist. And even though that was a very progressive position for the time, there are many people who feel we shouldn't glorify historical figures that wouldn't be progressive by today's standards.
I will never get over how unbelievably silly you have to be to focus on things like renaming schools named for Abraham Lincoln. Made even more silly by focusing on it in the middle of a pandemic in which your schools are closed for 13 months.
San Francisco really is bizarro world in some ways
Not as bizarro as it may seem, as those idiots all got shit-canned by Democratic voters.
It's because in SF and many places people don't pay attention to school board elections. Low-turnout elections like school board elections are prime targets for extremists to get in because they can rally support locally while other people don't even notice. Look what is happening in many red areas Qanon supporters are getting into districts and doing all sorts of paranoid stuff. Truly school board meetings in this pandemic era have become nightmarish to attend and extremely toxic.
In this case in SF the school board was so terrible it actually motivated people to do something, this is an impressive feat. I would advise absolutely everyone to actually take the effort to pay attention to the school board elections in your local area and take measures to actually vote and make sure no insane people get onto your local school board.
It's not silly at all. Governments and other organizations do stuff like that because they can't or won't tackle actual, serious problems. In 2019 San Francisco public schools, 69% of white and 72% of Asian kids met or exceeded grade standards in math. 14% of black kids did.
The school board either couldn't or wouldn't make the painful but necessary changes required to alter that. So instead... rename a school!
People b#tch and moan about "virtue signalling" for lots of reasons, but the most reasonable objection to it is that it's a charade designed to prevent real action.
It’s effectively a “woke spiral” situation. These people have no actual policy content (or generally any way to be effective), so they have to garner support by appealing to culture war virtue signaling. The problem is that everyone else is in the same boat, so everyone has to one-up each other in order to get attention. Hence these insane positions like renaming Lincoln schools.
Lincoln is pretty much the least offensive historical figure we name schools after, why she’d pick this fight to pick is insane to me
This is fucking horseshoe theory-- the Klan hates Lincoln too because he embarrassed the south and got rid of black slavery.
Now if only in Portland we could get a ballot measure to get the city to put back up their Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt statues…
In my eyes Portland is an ongoing experiment to see how far you can push a city left before it loops back around and effectively acts right-wing
Looks like we're getting close to a conclusion
I am confused by how big of a story r/neoliberal is making out of a local school board recall.
It's been a national story on and off for the better part of a year.
It’s because “woke bad.”
For real though, it’s obvious the full GOP has gone off the hinge to the extreme. It’s not as often that we get to see far left politicians with any kind of power.
It's funny that leftist have turned against Lincoln, because he and Marx were actually big fans of each other, and corresponded throughout the war.
Edit: Why the downvotes, this is historical fact?
I think you’re getting downvoted for the implication that “leftists” have turned on Lincoln.
This is literally the first and only time I’ve heard anyone complain about Abraham Lincoln, and she was overwhelmingly given the boot by probably one of the most progressive cities in the country.
