Very, very bad news for Ukraine. Apparently, Scholz not only pressured Zelensky on laws on special status to the occupied Donbas and local elections, but he also intends to put in writing that Ukraine won't become a NATO member. This won't be received well here in Ukraine

According to the polls, 58% of Ukrainians support Ukraine's NATO membership. They see it as a deterrent against Russian aggression. This number grew from about 30% after Russia attacked in 2014. In late 2014, Ukraine enshrined the goal to become a NATO member in its constitution

While the NATO membership is nowhere near for Ukraine, the prospect of it is important both for the government and the society. If Ukrainian leaders now cave in to Russian and Western pressure, this might spark unrest in the country. Just what Russia wants

After last week's Normandy four talks, Russian officials said they were disappointed Germany and France didn't pressure Ukraine enough. With his recent statements, endorsing Russian interpretation of the Minsk agreements and denying Ukraine's right to join NATO, Scholz delivers

In other words, Scholz is going to play the role of Chamberlain? That worked so well before...

This is not received well around the world. I am so sorry on behalf of westerners supporting Ukraine.

Too late, it gave it up to the Russians three decades ago

Who does Scholz think he is? NATO's door should not be closed for any country. Sell out.

You won't say same when Russian missiles start flying lol.
Few ballistic missiles will change tone
Думаю, ні. Але монолітність наших західних союзників, хай навіть поки бачена лише в їхній риториці, тріснула. А це на руку нашому ворогу

Don't forget Germany isn't only member of NATO.
Also Germany has no right, literally, say what another country can or can't do.

This might be because I'm Swiss, but being forced to remain outside any alliances but with neutrality guaranteed by great powers seems neither weird nor immoral...

Ukraine had guarantees from Budapest Memorandum. Worked out well, didn't it?

How is that possible under NATO agreement? In such case NATO member fulfilling its bilateral obligations vs Ukraine would end up involved in conflict and then what? Spain gets involved?

Seriously why Germany is even invited to these talks? They proved multiple times they sided with aggressor and doing everything in its favour. Who the hell they think they are??

He said it is not on the agenda...he is simply stating the obvious...not that he is saying they won't join NATO in the future.

Also, it would show that there is a lack of assessing Putin correctly (not to say “understanding” him). This all is not about NATO. It’s about Putin’s obsession to take control over Ukraine.

And he can unilaterally do that, how? I mean formalize non-membership in NATO. And to flip the coin - can someone else formalize NATO membership for Ukraine and Georgia?

Germany can veto them entering

If Russia doesn’t invade now because of this the best option for Ukraine is to heavily arm itself (cruise/Ballistic missiles) so that in future any Russian invasion would be costly for them and so they do not attach Ukraine.

Maybe not that bad after all. A severe war -possibly WWIII- is avoided for now & the concessions have not that a effect on Ukraine. These days states can make individual powerful military pacts, like Greece against invading Turks.
Germany just seems hellbent to always be on the wrong side of history...

Surpised?
Ukrainian bourgeoisie should have known this before Maidan and lying to rest of people about how they would be welcomed and integrated in EU and NATO
Capitalistic interrests of a minority as usually brought the majority of the People into a very serious crisis

Wait. How does Scholz even have the authority to make any such statements, presumably on behalf of NATO, let alone set them in writing?
Nato decisions are consensus decisions. Membership of Ukraine had no chance of consensus in 2008, and also not in 2022 or in the foreseeable future. Lets be realistic please.
