I wonder if he's getting calls from former leaders too. Angela Merkel is who I'm thinking of. Admittedly, Putin and Merkel had a complex relationship, but I'm told at one point it was remarkably close.
All the pleading even begging wouldn't have made a diff. Only make the callers feel they'd done their "best".
