Stamford Jewish schools merge

STAMFORD — The city has become the home of Connecticut's first comprehensive preschool through 12th-grade Jewish school.

The Bi-Cultural Day School, a Jewish school serving preschool through eighth grade, and the Jewish High School of Connecticut have merged to create the private Bi-Cultural Hebrew Academy.

“It creates greater opportunity to affiliate and educate children for a longer period of time,” Bi-Cultural Hebrew Academy Dean Rabbi Tzvi Bernstein said. “It’s nice to be able to find one home for your children’s education.”

BCHA Head of School Jacqueline Herman said the school is in transition this year as plans to merge the facilities are completed. For now, younger students will remain at the Bi-Cultural Day School facility on High Ridge Road and the high school students will stay at the West Main Street building.

However, the schools have already begun merging resources and staff.

The Jewish High School of Connecticut was formed eight years and was previously in Bridgeport/Trumbull and Woodbridge before moving to Stamford three years ago.

The Bi-Cultural Country Day School has been in Stamford since 1956 and serves about 320 students from preschool through eighth grade.

Herman said the goal is to merge the two schools to grow while continuing to offer general and Judaic studies to Fairfield County families. The schools will also eventually share programming.

The school already caters to families from Stamford, Greenwich, Ridgefield, Danbury, Westport, Norwalk, Wilton and Fairfield.

“It’s a good location in Stamford,” Herman said. “It’s commutable. A lot of families are moving in, looking for an excellent local Jewish day school coupled with a place of worship. We’re a community school. We believe strongly in the home-school-community partnership. It’s not just schools. We believe in partnering with parents and community to provide a full and comprehensive education for all our students.”

The BCHA will hold an open house for both campuses from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Nov. 4.
