Germany and France most certainly have a role to play in NATO. The reason the treaty organization exists is to keep the Russians from marching on Berlin..... again....

Putin has no interest in diplomacy. He just wants the barest veneer he can use to say to his people “well I tried, it’s not my fault” when Russia invades Ukraine again.
