In the long term probably, but I think this also resulted in some cache invalidation, so initially the opposite will likely true, but it’s a good investment!

Congrats on the rollout, Robin! Fair to say the data/bandwidth savings are the main win (awesome!), but page load times still not impacted much? (recalling Magnus thread)

Hey Robin! Congratulations on shipping! Is it in replacement of jpeg, webp or another other image type?

The system will generate the best image given browser support and file size constraints. As AVIF is supported in Firefox and Chromiums it’s generally replacing WebP, but if a WebP is still better than AVIF (eg at tiny sizes) we’ll serve that instead.
