Very sad to learn of the death of my friend and one-time colleague Brian Walden. Always wise and witty. A wonderful interrogator of politicians, especially on Weekend World. With Robin Day, he invented the British political interview style. Emulated but not matched to this day.

One of the very best, most accomplished and incisive interviewers and broadcasters.

And then feeding back the guests words with some of the implications leaving the guest floundering.

Speaking of Robin Day, I watched the coverage of the 1979 GE and there was Day puffing away on a cigar whilst talking to camera. Different days.

And several sexist comments from him too.

So do I. It would have been fair and incisive. Not that crap we got from Marr this morning.

A great loss, indeed. That style, and those days, are gone. He made a grilling sound polite. For what it's worth, I think you carry the torch well in a 21st century style.

It was his political analysis that I admired most. He laid bare the narrow range options that governments are faced with in the real world. RIP

Aye, used to watch Weekend World with my Dad... then later on Glen Michael's Cartoon Cavalcade!

Weekend World was the first political programme I took an interest in. He was a fab interrogator.

Completely agree. It feels like we need more of their kind (and length)of interview more than ever now. A great pity the BBC have been foolish enough to let you leave - they are the only broadcaster who can claim & show impartiality, and you by far their best interviewer IMHO.

Highly forensic, admirable political animal. A gent who had an underlining spark of genius.

A good interviewer, he just served up the questions I wanted him to ask.
Seemed a decent egg
RIP Brian.

Fond memories of my dad when I think of Brian Walden. Dad always watched him on television. Dad was inside Number 10 with Joe Haynes back in the seventies. I'll always remember those times as dad had all the papers delivered and a scrambler on the phone in his bedroom.

This is sad news. Never met Mr Walden, but I was a keen fan of Weekend World in the 80s. Always polite regardless of who he was interviewing, and very informative. I offer my condolences.

...and his daughter married Piers!.Still remember Robin D on QT "Sir, QT is many things but it is not a knocking shop". The greats are disappearing. R.I.P Mr Walden.

Weekend World always a good watch - with a weekly dose of Nantucket Sleighride....
just be patient, it’ll eventually be safe to come out again. Seriously, I loved watching Weekend World with Brian Walden when I was a child, and now understand what a privilege that was.

We are unlikely to see a one-hour interview with any politician outside of a general election ever again.

He was brilliant. Wasn't it him who asked Hattersley about his Sheffield Wednesday support c.f Labour support? (i.e. what's he supporting when everything's changed!)

I remember the hunted look on politician's faces when he uttered the words "let me just press you on that"

Immortalised forever in a spitting image portrayal of his Blair interview :-)
