Insane Asakura Asylum

Asakura Mental Hospital is one of the most haunted places in Saitama Prefecture. You won’t find many mental institutions in Japan, and this one in particular housed patients who were rejected by other hospitals. The patients spent the rest of their life constrained, forcefully injected with IV, and harshly treated by the staffs. These asylums tend to be built in the remote area, but this one was strangely built in the middle of the residential area with steel fences surrounding it. Perhaps its dark history is the reason why this place is believed to be haunted.

朝倉病院は埼玉県にある日本で数少ない精神病院の廃墟です。”精神病患者が最後に行きつく病院”として身寄りのない患者を受け入れていた病院。患者たちは、拘束され大量の点滴を打たれ人権を無視された入院生活を送っていました。このような病院は人里離れた場所にあるものですが、住宅密集地に存在し、鉄のフェンスに囲まれ異様な雰囲気を放っています。そして、心霊スポットとして噂が絶えないのは、この病院の暗い歴史が関係しています。

A Little History
It was originally established as a general hospital with internal medicine and psychiatry. Many of its patients were placed in a horrible environment, injected with IVH, and drained both mentally and physically. Aside from the ill treatment of patients, they were also getting away with countless medical billing frauds until the late 2000 when a former worker indicted and everything came to light. On July of 2001, the hospital was shut down, but over 40 patients have been killed. What surprises me the most is that the Director of Asakura Hospital was never stripped of his medical license even after what he has done. He still works at a hospital providing “care” for patients.

病院は内科と精神科があり総合病院として開業しました。患者の多くは劣悪な環境に置かれ、中心静脈栄養（ＩＶＨ）を投与され、心も体もボロボロにされました。また診療報酬不正受給が日常的に行われていました。2000年後期、元職員の告発により病院の度重なる不正が発覚。2001年7月に廃業しました。その間に亡くなった患者は40人以上に上る事態になりました。この病院を経営していた院長は、医療免許をはく奪されることなく現在も医療に従事している事実には驚きです。

The Meaning of “Private”
The wheelchairs, beds, and medical equipment show us glimpses of the past. All the windows were barred to prevent patients from escaping. You could see the neighboring houses and residents out of the window.

残された車椅子、病室のベット…医療機器はそのままに当時の面影を残します。病院全体の窓には飛び出し防止のための鉄格子。そこから外をのぞけば、ご近所さんが丸見え。患者さんもご近所さんも落ち着かないことこの上ないほどの隣接具合です。

Underground Ward
As you take the stairs down into the basement, you can feel the cold air passing you. This quarantine area, apart from the rooms with barred windows, felt like a prison cell instead of a hospital. I’m sure anyone who was placed in these bare concrete rooms shut out from the rest of the world would not survive long. I couldn’t stay long in that dreadfully close atmosphere, and quickly left the building.

地下の階段を下りていくと冷たい冷気が流れてきます。鉄格子の部屋が並ぶ地下の隔離エリアは、刑務所のような空間。外界との接触を完全にシャットアウトされたコンクリートむき出しの冷たい地下。ここに隔離されたら余計に精神を病んでしまう。息苦しくなり足早に地下を後にしました。
