Enlighten Asia in Japan 2021

Created by and for lighting design professionals, the Enlighten Conferences are a series of educational and networking events. The lighting community comes together to learn, share ideas and explore solutions with like-minded people who are passionate about light. Intimate by design, the events build meaningful connections and spark thought-provoking discussions with experts who inspire and motivate, moving architectural lighting design into the future.

〜Lighting for New Normal〜

All over the world, we are facing significant shifts in our values and the structures of our lives. The lighting design world needs to interpret this new era through the lens of rapid technological change and global environmental protection. We need to respond to the digital age and coexist and co-prosper with technologies in other fields. To stop wasting energy and eliminate light pollution to create a beautiful and comfortable nighttime environment.
At Enlighten Asia 2021 in Japan, we will begin to search for the new normal in lighting.

The Age of Forest

Nov. 10 10:00-10:30 JST (UTC+9) (Japanese / English Translation)

I think this pandemic will be a turning point from a life as a volume to that of a particle.
In the 20th century, human beings were trapped in big closed boxes.
It was the idea that confining people into big offices or factories was the most effective way to run the society.
Indeed, the world was leaning towards things that were mass-oriented or totalitarian. However, today’s technology enables people to remain as independent particles while living and working efficiently.
Their walking speed can be determined according to the situation. Post-covid architecture should therefore be more gentle and liberating that allows people to pursue deconcentrated lives.

Finding Darkness within the Light: The Role of Responsible Outdoor Lighting Design in Confronting the Global Loss of the Night

Nov. 11 10:00-10:30 JST (UTC+9) (English / Japanese Translation)

Light pollution is a novel environmental threat whose effects on the night sky, nocturnal wildlife, energy security and public safety are now well-established. Unlike other forms of environmental pollution, its remediation is simple and cost-effective in nature, and the results of taking action to reduce light pollution are immediate. In this presentation I will review some recent advances in our understanding of the causes and consequences of light pollution with particular regard to the role of lighting design and the built environment in both the causes of, and solutions to, the problem. I will further suggest that the time has arrived for the emergence of a movement in outdoor lighting design that prioritizes light pollution reduction as a core element of the designer’s guiding philosophy. Finally, I will conclude with a vision of the future in which responsible outdoor lighting design is the default rather than the exception, serving the interests of stakeholders, users of lighting, business and the environment in equal measure.

Panel Discussion

What are Asian Creators Aiming for after Corona

Nov. 10 10:40-11:40 (UTC+9) (English / Japanese Translation)

Steve Brown will act as Nostradamus and predict what Post-Covid might mean for lighting design and the visual environment.
Yeonso Lee suggests that we need to consider design that allows humans and spaces to coexist. This will enable us to provide experiential spaces that emphasize Post-Covid user experiences.
Hoang Le Ha believes this is an important time to consider sustainability in lighting design, in both our handling of resources and our design approaches.

The Appearance of Zen-Buddhism Garden under the Moonlight

Nov.10 11:50 -12:10 JST (UTC+9) (Japanese / Enlgish Translation)

Zen-Buddhism gardens covered with white sand were created to enjoy the appearance of a garden reflecting moonlight. Computer simulation using exact ray tracing reveals how one garden looked. We can observe how much this reflection of moonlight on white sand affected the building interior at night, how the relationship between the moonlit garden and the interior changed as architectural styles changed, and the difference in appearance between a moonlight garden during summer and winter.

Understanding Lighting Fixtures (Functional Lighting and Decorative Lighting)

Nov.10 12:20-12:40 JST (UTC+9) (Japanese / Enlgish Translation)

A lighting designer’s job is to satisfy the functional requirements of a space and to also evoke a feeling within that space through the use of light. For fixtures, functional value and emotional value can be broadly divided into functional lighting and design lighting. We need to understand design fixtures through exposure to designers’ thoughts, and this opportunity for exposure is rare. During this seminar, designers will give us valuable insights into their thoughts, allowing us to explore our perspectives on choosing light fixtures.

Merits and Demerits of LED

Nov.11 12:20-12:40 JST (UTC+9) (Japanese / Enlgish Translation)

Energy conservation and LED-use in Japan progressed further after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. Today, there has been a partial halt to incandescent bulb and fluorescent bulb manufacturing. Most lighting equipment has been replaced with LED light sources or equipment. This has impacted Japan’s lighting environment in several ways. We conducted a survey of IALD Japan members to examine the merits and demerits of these impacts.
