Just saying, with all the possible game starts it would be nice to have more save slots to be able to have a few save files per run. Not sure what the limit is, but might be good to start thinking about expanding the # of slots

. I'm thinking perhaps 20 slots now, which allows for ~2 saves per game start.
Only thing I can guess is to current limit of 10 save files per setup, to limit total save folder size.
Thoughts?

You can always do it manually by backing up your save file before you create a new game start. It would be nice if this was somehow offered by in-game UI, grouping saves by game start, but it’s not. Save disk space by deleting old and unused saves in the backup.
If you then want to go back to your progress with a different game start, swap your save file back and relaunch the game.
EDIT: To clarify, I’d prefer not having more than 10 saves, instead I’d rather have something like “Profiles” in other games, where you can keep saves from different playthroughs completely separate, and each one has a certain number of saves.

I like this option too

Either "profiles" where I can switch full sets or more save-game slots.
The steam cloud option (which I use as I don't always use the same machine to play) makes that difficult as it tends to undo the manual changes to the saves.

Just to echo what others are saying...
It would be fantastic if we had saves attached to a profile or character so we could start a new game with a new start without requiring us backing up our saves.
