- I was listening to a song version of a poem -- "The Highwayman" (20th century poem) -- and I at first thought that the landlord's daughter was tied up and raped. She tried to escape when she saw her man riding near on a horse and was shot by a redcoat. I thought it was a story of British oppression of Scottish people or Americans (when the British occupied the land of Scots or Americans, one of the other). I guess it would make sense for the English to enact their treachery on ne'er-do-wells or those who associate with them. The inn owner and the inn owner's daughter (whose name is Bess, I reckon) associate with a highwayman. According to Wikipedia, it is a story in which a stableman sells out the highwayman who is in a relationship with Bess. The stableman wanted Bess for himself. To warn the highwayman of the setup that the English set, Bess shoots and kills herself. Why didn't she just fire a shot into the air and not kill herself? I guess that wouldn't be very dramatic, or maybe there was some other reason. The highwayman later brainlessly goes out for revenge but is killed. The story takes place in 17th century England or thereabouts.
- P.S. Bess was held at gun point so the only way she could have the gun fire (and thus alert the unnamed highwayman) is by compelling a redcoat to fire it; see <http://stikked.luisaranguren.com/view/1951b499>.
