You're both wrong. VM in that context is more like "not a Java Virtual Machine" than "not a Virtualbox VM".

It's more complicated than this, but the idea is that it can run DirectX programs without implementing DirectX at all.
An emulator would fully implement DX and then talk to Linux only for drawing stuff on the screen.

Is there any reason I cannot transfer files between two external drives on arch? I can transfer to my internal drive just fine from both drives. When I try to drag the files I want to copy between drives it simply doesn't do anything (using thunar as a gui file manager with i3). I've tried using cp -r but it only copies like two files and then just hangs while nothing happens (I waited an hour and two files totaling 600MB were transferred in the first minute and nothing after). Any other method I can try?

Um, that's exactly what it does, because ReactOS uses Wine for almost the entire userspace, with a couple of adjustments to the lowest-level stuff because it's running on an NT-style kernel rather than wineserver.

How would I backup everything to move from Windows 7 to Windows 10. What's really keeping me from making this change all this time is the various project files I have in various programs, that I don't want to lose or become unopenable. Destination disk is failing when using smartmontools. Very surprised as the source drive is much older and slower but passed while the destination disk was purchased two months ago. Thanks for the tip anon, thankfully I've got a new one coming tomorrow but not to replace the one it was meant to.

When I was moving from 7 to 10 recently (my OEM copy couldn't be upgraded) I backed up:

Realized that I'm actually an idiot and when I formatted the destination drive I did not create a partition. Not sure how it was even showing up in my file manager. Anyway it's properly formated now and both drives are passing smartctl but I still cannot copy between the drives using thunar. Will reattempt with cp -r but we shall see what happens

I am tech illiterate so bear with me for a second. I bought this laptop a couple of days ago and it works flawlessly so far on the software side of things, but I find that, when I put my ear close to the front of the thing, just above the keyboard, I can hear a slight buzzing / static noise. if i continued to learn C++ on the side while making my own passion projects, a few years of webdev experience would be enough to land a job as a C++ dev, right? assuming i have an adequate portfolio of projects and experience with related technologies (largely back end)

i fucking HATE javascript, but there's lots of money to be made with this fucking language

the plan for now is to get into the field as a front end codemonkey, transition into backend, and then transition into C++ devops
is this a feasible plan?

or would i be best off to just make my own projects and try to freelance/sell them/start my own business?

i know i'm asking a lot of questions, i don't expect anybody to answer all of them

After installing the latest Ubuntu updates and rebooting, the display seemed off. So I decided to switch from my current Nvidia drivers to Noveau.
Well, it seems to open all fine, can access BIOS and stuff, and the Ubuntu loading screen is crisp again, but after the loading screen, the screen itself turns off.
Did I just brick my computer?

it'll help you understand the logic involved in solving certain types of programs
but most gamedev programming is literally just calling a function when a button is pressed or when two objects collide
you'll spend most of your time learning C# syntax

i suggest you try it out if it seems appealing
but a website like learncpp.org or the odin project would be best if your only goal is to become a better programmer

making games with unity is fun though

I got a new house and my friends (who work in IT/Networking/Cybersecurity) are pushing me to rig it up for data since I am gutting the place. Well they they all agree I should use CAT6A cables, but they don't agree on much else. They are split between CRS312-4C+8XG-RM and USW-16-PoE as the main switch for my house, and none of them can agree on what router to use (which must be Verizon Fios compatible). Apparently I don't need a modem with Fios, so at least that one less thing to figure out.

How do I get them to stop fighting? I use like 5 to 15 Mbps with Youtube, email, and web browsing. The Fios service is limited to 940 Mbps if I get the expensive package, and they are debating about 10 Gbps stuff. Does remoting to the computer upstairs to stream 1080p video downstairs really need this kind of gear? They call it future proofing which I can support as I don't like changing stuff, more so once the walls go back up. But this seems to be overkill and I don't know enough to tell who to side with to settle this fighting. They are getting really aggressive about this I fear if I can't make a decision soon it might fracture our group of friends. What on earth do people do with that kind of bandwidth in there homes? And how can we have stayed friends through everything for years only for a fight over router and switch selection make such a deep schism? Half tempted at this point to go nuclear and hookup my old AirPort Extreme 1034, as they all universally hated that thing but that could end our group.

A lot of stuff, I basically want to /g/it /g/ud [enough] at compsci since I first learned some very minimal amount of it at high school and it very clearly wasn't enough. I have some prior knowledge to cpp (albeit very basic and incomplete, and by that I mean they taught us to write using namespace std; , which after a quick google search in highschool I saw results mostly saying it's not good practice but everyone taught it anyway).
Most importantly, though, I'd like to eventually be able to understand what some big software is actually doing by simply looking at their source code, considering I didn't even really learn much about programming other than how to make some stuff that barely required 30 lines of code.

That's part of what I was thinking, but we have been together for over a decade. I even introduced half of them to their wives. It seemed wrong to break up over which router I select for my home network given how great the group has been. But I feel like people changed over time, and I have less and less reason to be friends with them. I was hoping some technology could fix this, some router that would make them all agree, but it looks like it is not really that kind of problem.

How do I safely close a file descriptor? Let's say I have a C++ wrapper around standard BSD sockets and want to close fd in the destructor, like this:

You should never throw an exception in a destructor. Doing this while the stack is unwinding will call std::terminate.
Have an explicit close method which returns an error somehow, either an exception or some error code. Have the destructor call that method and swallow the error, possibly while logging it.

Cat5e is enough for 2.5Gbit/s, *do not* waste money on Cat6, absolutely pointless.
Depending on how big the house is, you might get away with a good WiFi router (Asus RT-AC87U, for example).

Yes I do have that installed. I ran cp -r and it is working just fine. It was my fault for not partitioning the drive properly. Still a little weird it doesn't work with thunar but I think that has something to do with needing su privileges

The option to change the resolution is grayed out and I can't figure out why. I am using a USB to VGA cable connection, it's a janky workaround, but was working fine for the little bit I use the 2nd monitor for.

I know I messed with color management settings the other day to fix something, but I think they're back at defaults and the monitor looking like shit and those changes were a few days apart.

Any ideas?

Yeah, I figured that out after reencoding the video 5 times.

Is lube granted to fix the rattling? Now that I try it again the rattling is present in all of the long keys (spacebar, backspace, enter, shift). Once I get lube I just have to apply a drop to the metal stabilizer that's beneath the keycaps, right?

I'd hazard comparing it to Apple software - some people like iOS, it does what they want, it's clean, makes some decisions for you and if it fits your workflow I don't have a problem with it (recent privacy shitfest aside). Some people might prefer to have some more control, more features (which Apple devs didn't consider necessary) and pick Android instead.

I have ONE device, just happens to be my main W10 one, that is slow with SFTP to a seedbox. Wifi6e or 2.5gb ethernet both slow. If I go to the seedbox index via HTTPS it is also slow, if I use SFTP via ANY method, it is slow. Steam can get 115megabytes a second download, speedtest shows my full gigabit down/up speed too.

Literally all other devices, Windows/linux/android, on Wifi ac/ax and wired, get full speed transfers. Every other device can download at 30-50megabytes a second during congestion of my seedbox and 100 or so when not congested. My main W10 device is at best 600kbytes/s.

I just redid W10 and it was fine a week ago, nothing changed as far as I can tell. I tried other programs too.

Is there some random ass hidden option causing this? I tried ftp as well to make sure it wasn't sftp issue. It is as if something was changed forcing W10 to treat downloads from this area hostile. I turned off defender/firewall and reinstalled the drivers for wifi6e and the 1g/2.5g ethernet ports.

Many female virgins to the person that figures this out. Totally stumped as I have never seen this in 20+ years of networking.

Synology very good for first time NAS. ofcourse you can go cheaper with some DIY options but if you're even slightly on the fence synology to be a great first step. very easy, lower power, plug and play. You will still learn a good amount using it and when you feel like you're ready for the next level you can start worrying about bigger/better. Synology should last you a few solid years at least and can be kept even longer as a backup device if you end up switching to something else later.

other items there you listed you can figure out once youve got it running. you should already have a router from your ISP. could bother with DDNS but imo just install tailscale, super easy. Synology also has their own remote access setting you can configure which routes via their servers, very quick and easy and mostly secure but i'd suggest using VPN or tailscale instead.

Just purchased a librebooted T400 Thinkpad that I plan on switching to a different OS (FreeBSD or Void) than what it is coming with (Trisquel). It has a Core 2 Duo, and 4GB of ram. I'm running on Lubuntu 19.10 on a low end Lenovo thinkpad.
I was torrenting shit last night and my SSD filled up until there was no available space. I shut down the computer because I had stuff to do and when I turned it back on it just stays on BIOS boot screen - sometimes the mouse is just there but it doesn't do anything (it's essentially bricked)

Obviously it needs space but I don't know how to delete files so it can have room to boot. I disconnected the SSD and connected it to my PC and found DiskInternals program called 'Linux Reader' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1NbLxY1HwU but unfortunately it's read-only and not read-write so I can't delete files

Is there any way to delete files using another program? Or is there any other method other than using Windows?

My decade-old LG monitor is having this issue where either the whole upper right quadrant or the whole screen has no backlight, and the issue randomly comes and goes by powering on and off the monitor. I don't know if it's a LED strip or a power supply issue, but I'd rather buy a new monitor and keep this as a secondary if I can get it repaired.
I'm on a relatively tight budget. Apparently I should get an IPS panel with at least a density of 100ppi given my sitting distance and given it's for (budget) gaming and general internet browsing/watching videos, but I was ideally going for a 27" screen and 1080p doesn't get dense enough at that size. Should I go for 1440p or 4K? I read that 1440p has pixel interpolation issues with 1080p and 720p content since they're not related by an integer like 1080p and 4K, but I don't know if 4K is worth the price hike.
Also any brand/model recommendations? I saw an LG 24MK600M, it looked okay price and specs wise (24"@1080p gave me close to 100ppi just like my old monitor) and even allowed for 75Hz and Freesync but then I saw people complaining that blues and oranges show a thin line pattern and that everything gets fucky if the monitor pushes past 60Hz. No idea what to start looking for other than autistically reviewing every single option.

There are a few options on Amazon that may fit the bill. I have had good luck with the Samsung LC line and the Samsung S line monitors, both of which I bought "renewed" versions for much cheaper than their new counterparts. The S line are ultrawide monitors though so I'm not sure if you would like them, however you can get them for a real bang for your buck all things considered. I have had no experience with LG monitors before though so I dont know if they are better than the ones I have mentioned. Good luck

720p is an integer for 1440. I would say there's a slight fuzzyness on 1080 console gaming, but not really a dealbreaker. I'm fairly happy with the video output. Also for a lot of shit you can use some form of upscaling. 1440p/27 is pretty damn sweet.

Keep it plugged in when at your desk for hours, unplug when you need to attend a meeting for an hour or two or when you just have to work from a bench in the park.
Maybe my previous post wasn't clear enough: don't overthink it, use the laptop and don't worry about these details. The laptop will become obsolete long before the battery dies and you can always buy a cheap replacement battery in 5-7 years if you still want to keep the laptop.

bringing it up to 100% should only be for when you're actually going to use it on battery
lithium batteries don't like being at max charge for long periods, it will wear it out faster than if you keep it at storage charge

Try another extension cable, I guess. Also try rotating both connectors (test all 4 possible combinations) just in case some pin doesn't make good contact.

imagine I have a file with some random text like:

i searched for 30 sec and found out how to disassemble the bottom panel, from there, its easy just to take out the disk, same way goes in too, just use guitar pick or old plastic card to pry it open if it resists at first - dont use a knife or screwdriver

Case:

I have two sticks of RAM, 4GB each. Image shows the specifics (got of Google, but everything matches on my sticks of RAM too)
Slotting both sticks into my Latitude E6410 and running a memory diagnostic, the memtest goes through for about 3 minutes, then a white screen flashes and the laptop restarts.
If I stick only one in, and try the memory test, it just turns off and reboots, no white screen.
I have another stick of 2GB ram;
[Nanya 2GB PC3-10600 DDR3-1333MHz Non-ECC Unbuffered CL9 NT2GC64B88B0NS-CG]
This one works in one slot, goes through the memory test just fine. I've read online that the E6410 can support up to 8GB of memory.

Right now I'm just trying to determine if my 8GB sticks are:
A) Broken
B) Not supported
C) Just a fluke and I need to keep them and am just stupid and this whole thing was dumb

Any ideas fellas?

np, if you have a hddl definitely get an ssd, its worth it, also you can "newegg it" to see which one you want, i suggest 1-2TB crucial MX500

Also forgot to append to my post again.
I've tried to boot an ISO of Kali (don't laugh, just wanted to do hard drive recovery) and it wasn't working until I tried with just the 2GB stick.
The GRUB screen would show, but if I tried to go into it, it would freeze and whitescreen (with the 4GB sticks)

My bluetooth headphones stopped playing audio from my computer and I don't know why. I haven't had a problem up until this week but when I connect them to my PC they show up in the audio section of the Bluetooth settings page and they say connected (though it used to say connected audio and voice) but they don't appear as a selectable option on the sound icon on my tray or in EarTrumpet.
