Digital Agency

What is the Digital Agency?

The Digital Agency, has been established on September 1, 2021, contributes to reforming the culture of administration in a user-driven manner through digitalization.

Until now, government ministries and agencies had individually created legal and regulatory systems for their own areas. This made it difficult for government employees to learn of the systems of other ministries or agencies or even the systems of another division in their own organization.

As a result, ministries and agencies were not necessarily succeeding in providing user-friendly services. With government websites presenting different designs and usability and having no data linkage between each other, users often had to return to their search results again and again trying to find the appropriate website for following the desired procedure, being asked to enter their address or other personal information over and over, and they ended up having to visit a ward office after all.

In particular, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the delay in digitalization of Japan’s administration. For example, in paying monetary benefits to restaurants cooperating in the government’s closure requests, it took a long time from the receipt of application until the actual remittance of the benefits, as necessary documents, such as certificates, were received in paper format and they required long hours to check in detail.

In order to alter such status quo, we at the Digital Agency cut across all ministries and agencies with a digital axis, with an aim to provide services that are driven not toward ministries, agencies, laws, or systems, but toward users and to improve user-experience.
