NEW: Immunity to the coronavirus lasts at least a year, possibly a lifetime, and improves over time especially after vaccination, according to two new studies.

Let me say right off: This does NOT mean people who have been infected can skip vaccines. But it does mean that those who were infected and then vaccinated have what one researcher called "bulletproof" protection against variants, and will probably never need boosters

It's the combo of infection and vaccination that is powerful here. The results will most likely not apply to those who never had Covid and were vaccinated, because immune memory is not consolidated the same way after vaccination as it is after infection.

One study analyzed bone marrow cells in people who recovered from Covid and showed that even a year after infection, most people have memory cells that can produce antibodies as needed, even if blood levels of the antibodies are low. (Most is not all, though, so get vaccinated!)

And the second showed that memory B cells keep maturing and broadening their repertoire over at least a year. And when people who've recovered from Covid get vaccinated, their neutralizing ability goes through the roof. So they will essentially be set against any variants.

This is not altogether surprising given the study I covered in November, but the bone marrow analysis is cool, as is the evidence of continuing memory B cell maturation. The human body is a wondrous machine

Many thanks to and for this interesting work, and to and for their perspective

Good thing this virus isn't changing or anything. Otherwise it might be able to reinfect people.

Real fantastic piece — very clear distillation of the science. Thank you for all the great work you do.

What amount of time passage, post infection, is optimal to receive vaccine? Thanks

this is super cool stuff. Does this mean that my nursing 1 yr old (who had covid when I did) who won’t be eligible for vaccination, is safer (I know my breast milk has antibodies bc I took part in a research study & they unblinded my results!)?

Immunity to viruses often tapers as antibodies break down without replacement.
Long-term immunity to #COVID19 was found, but only to the original and its close mutations, such as B.1.1.7 from the UK.
(It may not apply to future ones, or India's B.1.617.)

Maintaining immunity, however attained, would seem a good thing. But if I need a booster like the Tetanus vaccine, or yearly like influenza, as recommended by the medical professionals from whom I seek guidance, I’m good.

Yep, I figured it would be a yearly booster, like my flu shot. No biggie. If not, that’s just fine too...

This is an odd way of formulating this. Immunity to common coronaviruses that cause colds is long lasting — that’s *why* they only cause mild colds and don’t put us on a ventilator, right?

Indeed!

Interesting because B cell depleting therapies - which are used to treat certain inflammatory diseases - severely blunt even the initial reaction to the vaccine

Would you be able to detail those therapies here? I am in a group of people with inflammatory disease, and it would be really useful to have information on this to share. It would help inform people as regards the need to vaxx.

This is only anecdotal, but two people I know very well who had COVID (with positive tests) caught it again more than 90 days after, had pretty bad cases again, and tested positive.
One in 20s, one in early 70s.

Good reason then to get a vaccine.

What if you think you had COVID but were not tested? How do you know your immunity?

What would a breakthrough infection bring to immunity after it clears?
Like we said...

As someone who recovered from Covid a year ago and is vaccinated, this is some of the best news I’ve read in a long time. Thanks for your reporting.

Thiss interesting as I read an article by virologist that said vaccines probably won't last and the biggest risk is it mutating into a super bug. Let me see if I can find it

I can't find it!! It was an article on the Squid news app.

Here comes Big Pharma funded “studies” to tell you this is wrong and you need two boosters per year. C.R.E.A.M.

If Pharma cared they would open up the patents and let's others manufacturer it. Like you said C.R.E.A.M

Can I know still after vaccination if I had CoVid a time ago (say 12-15 Month)?

I think it’s theoretically possible, i haven’t seen a commercial test or lab offering to that though.

I look forward to seeing what studies tell us about vaccinated folks a year from now, but this is certainly encouraging!
